Furnace Friday, LIVE: Britain heads for meltdown

Furnace Friday, LIVE: Britain heads for meltdown with record-breaking temperatures and getaway travel chaos

With possible record-breaking temperatures expected over the next 48 hours and thousands of people heading off on holiday, travellers have been warned to prepare for major delays.

Yesterday, temperatures reached a staggering 95F at Heathrow Airport and today, it is predicted the maximum temperature could hit almost 99F.

Yet, the extended heatwave is causing problems for A&E departments as they were inundated with dehydrated patients, while commuters on the London Underground sweltered in conditions which would be illegal for the transportation of animals.

The Met Office has said there is a 70 per cent chance that the UK’s temperature record for July of 98F could be beaten today – or a 30 per cent chance of beating the highest ever – 101.3F, set in August 2003.

The AA has warned that roads are turning to ‘chocolate’ in the heat, while Network Rail said tracks were in danger of buckling in the heat.
