Good Samaritan tackles drunk driver who tried to flee scene of deadly crash in shocking video

Shocking video from the scene of a crash in Texas shows the moments a Good Samaritan chased down a drunk driver who ran a red light and slammed into a car, killing an off-duty police officer.

In the newly released video, D., 26, is seen attempting to flee the scene after he smashed into an off-duty cop and his family. Cervantes died at the scene while his wife and two sons were badly injured.

The video shows a man chasing D. – who had been served 16 shots of alcohol before getting into his rental Jeep- and holding onto him so he couldn’t escape.

‘You stay right there, motherf***er! You see what you did?!’ said the good Samaritan. ‘You f***ing killed somebody, you motherf***er!’

The video shows D., a now convicted felon, pacing around the scene of the accident while others stand around taking the damage in and calling the police. Viewers can see the crashed rental Jeep as well as other good Samaritans attempting to break into the car he hit head-on.

After several seconds of pacing, D. makes a break for it, running as a bystander records the entire situation.

In an interview with FOX 4 Dallas, a Good Samaritan said adrenaline kicked in and he knew what he had to do after witnessing the wreckage. ‘I wanted him down. I wanted him done with. I wanted the cops to be there to get him,’ the man told the local outlet.

In the video, a Good Samaritan is seen running after D., eventually pinning him to the ground and screaming profanities at the drunk driver. While speaking with the outlet about the shocking video, a Good Samaritan offered up an apology for repeatedly using the f-word.

‘I’d like to apologize for the language I was using,’ he said. ‘At that time, I just blacked out. I had the father instincts, the dad instincts. Because two seconds later, it would’ve been my car,’ Good Samaritan continued.

The head-on collision killed an off-duty Euless Police Detective on impact.

The bystanders seen in the video attempting to break into the sedan the police officer was driving prior to the crash were working to pull out his sons and wife who were pinned. Good Samaritan said he was traveling right behind the police officer and watched the entire crash in horror.

Instantly, the good Samaritan said he knew D. was drunk when he approached him. He had an instinct the man was going to run. ‘Something in me was telling me he’s going to run. Something’s not right in the situation. I could feel something was not right in the situation,’ he said.

‘I figured he was still walking behind me. But at that point, it’s when he turned around and started running. At that point when he started running, something clicked again. ‘And I was like what is this man doing? And I just turned around and started going after him,’ he recalled.

It is believed that before the accident, D. had been served eight double vodka Red Bull cocktails and 16 single shots, according to KDFW.  After the deadly collision, a local bartender was arrested in connection to the crash and is facing a misdemeanor charge of allegedly overserving alcohol.

‘Eight doubles, 16 single shots, is more than anybody should have in a three-hour period. Maybe even at all,’ Lake Worth Police Chief J.T. Manoushagian said.

Video of D. inside a bar prior to the accident has been released, as well, showing the inebriated man continuing to hold a drink, even while stumbling.

‘Clearly, not in a good place to be operating a vehicle. Clearly intoxicated. He’s holding another one of those double vodka and Red Bull drinks there, and then he simply walks away,’ Manoushagian said.

D. will now serve 15 years in prison for his actions. ‘It’s not gonna bring the police officer back, but at least he’s locked behind bars and not able to hurt another family as he did ours,’ said the widowed wife of the police officer.
