Grimes reveals she and Elon Musk lived in  ‘a very insecure $40,000 house’

Tesla billionaire Elon Musk and his on-and-off again girlfriend Grimes lived in a ‘very insecure $40,000 house’ because he doesn’t lead a billionaire’s lifestyle, the singer has revealed.

In a sit-down interview with Vanity Fair, the 33-year-old singer opened up about her ‘fluid’ relationship with Elon, who has an estimated net worth of $228.7 billion, explaining that the couple were still romantically involved and were co-parenting their two children together, despite living in separate homes.

She recalled how they had previously lived together, saying: ‘Bro does not live like a billionaire. Bro lives at times below the poverty line. To the point where I was like, can we not live in a very insecure $40,000 house? Where the neighbors, like, film us, and there’s no security, and I’m eating peanut butter for eight days in a row?’

The singer insisted they didn’t live like billionaires when together, saying: ‘“The Mars project is hard. There’s no income for it. There’s no way for it to make money. [His Mars project] is for the benefit of humanity, and it’s dangerous and it’s expensive, and people are like, ‘He’s hoarding money!’ No, he’s spending everything on R&D.’

The billionaire CEO previously announced that he had systematically sold off most his assets including several California properties amounting to more than $100 million – as well as $15 billion worth of Tesla stock – and moved into the unassuming, property, reported to be worth $50k, last June.

Musk, the CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX, famously declared last year that he would ‘own no house’ and went on to sell off his nine California mansions for a total of $144 million.

‘My primary home is literally a ~50k house in Boca Chica/Starbase that I rent from SpaceX,’ he wrote in a June tweet.

After unloading all of his properties sans the one in the Bay Area, Musk moved to Austin in June, and touted his new Tiny House on social media, but neglected to post any photos of the paltry digs – supposedly situated a stone’s throw from the company’s bourgeoning new headquarters and SpaceX‘s Boca Chica launch site.

Musk, the richest man in the world, is worth about $240 billion on paper, but much of that is in his Tesla stock holdings.

Some speculated that he was motivated to sell his properties in order to raise cash to exercise stock options that will expire in August.

Is this the home where Grimes lived with Elon Musk and felt ‘insecure’ with very little security?

Elon Musk previously said he was living in a 375-square-foot modular home made by the company Boxabl, according to the Musk fan blog Teslarati and the Houston Chronicle.

He has said that he is renting the home for about $50,000.

Though Musk has not confirmed the name of the company that made his home, a Boxabl unit appears to be visible on the site on Google Earth.

The company’s homes are tiny but stylish, set up like a studio apartment with an open plan living area, kitchen and bedroom, with an adjacent bathroom.

The properties are assembled from a folded box made of concrete panels and steel.

Teslarati reported that the model Musk is renting is a mass-produced 20-foot-by-20-foot ‘foldable prefabricated home,’ named the Boxabl Casita.

Boxabl has not confirmed whether Musk is living in one of its homes but in November announced it had built a Casita for a ‘high-profile’ and ‘top secret’ customer in Boca Chica.

‘My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX. It’s kinda awesome though,’ he wrote in early June.

Interestingly, Grimes hinted that X and Y are currently splitting their time between their parents’ homes, noting during the interview that her son was spending time with his father, while she was caring for their newborn daughter.

Both Grimes and Elon – who also spoke briefly to the Vanity Fair writer – said that their separate living situation was the best solution for both of them, explaining that they each have very different needs and likes when it comes to creating a home.

While Elon likes things to be ‘reasonably neat’, Grimes is described as taking a more creative, artistic approach to her home. She also enjoys Japanese art and anime, which the Tesla founder explained he ‘doesn’t like’.

The singer also took issue with the Tesla founder’s penny-pinching lifestyle, recalling a time when they were living together in Los Angeles and he refused to buy a new mattress, despite her telling him that her side of the bed had a hole in it.

Meanwhile Grimes confirmed yesterday the couple has called quits on their relationship in a series of tweets.

‘Me and E have broken up *again* since the writing of this article,’ she wrote in the tweets which were posted approximately four hours after her interview was published online, and which were ‘liked’ by her ex Elon.

‘But he’s my best friend and the love of my life.’

She also opened up about the then-couple’s new arrival, but only after the Vanity Fair writer who conducted the interview at Grimes’ new Austin, Texas, home overheard the baby girl crying in an upstairs room.

Having initially told the publication that she was ‘not at liberty to speak on… whatever is going on with family stuff’, Grimes admitted that she had welcomed a daughter with Elon, before later sharing details about the newborn’s quirky name.

According to the singer, the little girl’s unique first name, Exa, was inspired by the supercomputing term exaFLOPS, which is ‘the ability to perform one quintillion floating-point operations per second’, while her second name Dark, is a nod to dark matter and ‘the unknown’.

‘People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe,’ she told the magazine.

Finally, Sideræl, which is pronounced sigh-deer-ee-el, is a ‘more elven spelling’ of sidereal, which Grimes described as ‘the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time’.

Their daughter’s third name is also a reference to Grimes’ favorite Lord of the Rings character, the elf Galadriel.

The ex-couple will call their baby daughter ‘Y’ for short, following the trend they started with the arrival of their first-born child, son X Æ A-12, who Grimes gave birth to in May 2020, and whom she and Elon call ‘X’.

However they were forced to change the spelling of their son’s name in order to comply with California law, which prohibits the use of any numbers of symbols in a name.

The meaning of Exa Dark Sideræl in Grimes’ own words

Exa: A nod to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS, which is ‘the ability to perform one quintillion floating-point operations per second’.

Dark: A reference to dark matter and ‘the unknown’. ‘People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe.’

Sideræl: Pronounced sigh-deer-ee-el, this name is a ‘more elven spelling’ of sidereal, which Grimes describes as ‘the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time’. It is also a nod to the singer’s favorite Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel.

Instead, they revealed just a few weeks after the baby was born that his birth certificate would be registered under the name X AE A-Xii – using the Roman numeral version of the number ’12’ and changing the character æ to AE.

If Elon and Grimes choose to register their newborn daughter’s birth certificate in Texas, they will have to alter the spelling of her name, removing the symbol æ once again in order to comply with state regulations, which only allow English characters to be used in a name.

Grimes conceded to Vanity Fair that the pair’s unique choice of names are not to everyone’s tastes, admitting that she is prepared for her daughter to one day try and change her name.

In the meantime, the baby girl has already been given a few alternatives, with the singer revealing that she and Elon also refer to their daughter as Sailor Mars, which was inspired by the manga cartoon, Sailor Moon.

The musician added that she had chosen ‘dream’ name for her daughter, Odysseus, before she and Elon settled on the moniker Exa Dark Sideræl.

Grimes’ surprise baby announcement comes less than six months after the couple reportedly split up for the first time, having been dating for three years.

At the time of the interview, which is thought to have been conducted in the past two months, the singer described her relationship with the tech entrepreneur as ‘fluid’, explaining that while she ‘would probably refer to [Elon] as her boyfriend’, the couple were not living together and each ‘had their own thing going on’.

While she and Elon were not living together even while they were in a relationship, Grimes shared that she relocated in December from her home in Los Angeles to a property in Austin, Texas, where she is currently residing in a ‘sleepy neighborhood cul-de-sac’ that is located ‘a short drive’ away from Tesla’s factory.

‘I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid,’ she said.

‘We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time…. We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it.

Grimes reveals the meaning behind her son X Æ A-12’s name

X: This represents ‘the unknown variable’.

Æ: Grimes’ ‘elven spelling of AI’, which represents both ‘love and/or artificial intelligence’.

A-12: The ‘precursor to [the] SR-17′, which is Grimes’ and Elon’s ‘favorite aircraft’ because it has ‘no weapons, no defenses, just speed’ and is ‘great in battle, but non-violent’. A also represents Archangel, which is Grimes’ favorite of her own songs.

‘This is the best it’s ever been…. We just need to be free.’

In the tweets she posted about the interview, Grimes insisted that she had not intended to reveal the news about her daughter’s arrival, nor open up about her relationship with Elon, explaining that she ‘did [it] to speak about her work’.

She also requested privacy for her infant daughter, writing: ‘I did this to speak [about] my work, not ‘reveal all’ haha. Def held back a lot, contrary [to] headline. & didn’t mean for them [to] find out about my daughter so please respect her privacy as I’d love her to be able to live as private of a life as possible.’

According to writer Devin Gordon, who interviewed Grimes at her home for the publication, the news about Y’s birth was only brought to light after he overheard the baby girl crying upstairs while speaking to the singer about her upcoming music.

In the article, he describes the moment, writing: ‘About 15 minutes after we sit down to discuss her new music, a ‘space opera’ due this spring-ish tentatively called Book 1, I hear what sounds vaguely like a lone cry from an infant upstairs. I think I notice Grimes wince, but I say nothing and move on. Could be anything.

‘Another few minutes pass… I hear it again. This time it’s multiple cries, and it’s unmistakable. I’ve got two kids. That’s a baby. And I can tell by the frozen look on my host’s face that she heard it too.’

Gordon writes that he then asked Grimes whether she ‘had another baby in her life’, which the singer initially refused to confirm, citing her desire to let the ‘kids stay out of’ the public eye.

In her tweets, Grimes explained that she had not meant for the publication to find out about her daughter's birth; the writer who interviewed the singer at her Austin home revealed in the piece that he only learned about Y's arrival when he hear the baby girl crying upstairs

Triplets Kai, Saxon, and Damian Musk, 16: Less than two years after Justine gave birth to her twins, she and Elon welcomed three sons in January 2006. Like their older brothers, the triplets were conceived via IVF.

X Æ A-12, 22 months: Elon’s first child with singer Grimes was born in May 2020 in California.

Late baby boy Nevada Alexander Musk: The Tesla founder’s ex-wife Justine gave birth to their first child, son Nevada, in 2002, however the newborn died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at just 10 weeks old.

Describing her role in her son’s life, Grimes said that she has taken responsibility for ‘handling his creative stuff’, while she notes that Elon ‘really sees [X] as a protégé’.

Although the singer did not explain exactly why she and Elon chose to welcome their second child via surrogate, she revealed that she struggled with some severe health issues in the final month of her pregnancy with X, explaining that she was left unable to walk because her unborn son was ‘pressing on her nerves’, causing her to keep collapsing.

She also suffered from a ‘scary’ hemorrhage that was so severe, the singer believed she was going to die.

As well as his two children with Grimes, billionaire SpaceX founder Elon is also father to five son with his first wife Justine, whom he divorced in 2008 after eight years of marriage.

The former couple share twins Griffin and Xavier, born in 2004, and triplets Kai, Saxon and Damian, born in 2006; all five of the children were conceived via IVF.

They also welcomed a baby boy named Nevada in 2002, but the newborn tragically died of sudden infant death syndrome in 2002.

Following his split from Justine, Elon began dating British actress Talulah Riley, whom he married and divorced a total of two times within six years.

Talulah, who was a virgin when she began dating Elon in 2008, first tied the knot with the Tesla billionaire in 2010, however their first marriage broke down and ended in 2012, when she reportedly walked away with $16 million as part of their divorce settlement.

By the following summer they had remarried but then in December 2014 she sued for divorce a second time, only to withdraw her lawsuit the following year.

Then, in March 2016, Talulah, now 36, filed for divorce a third time and the pair split permanently; the couple did not have any children together.

Grimes is determined to keep her daughter’s life as private as possible – unlike her son X who has been featured numerous times on his father’s social media accounts, and has been seen out in public with his parents on several occasions.

The singer notes that her son ‘is just out there’, largely because Elon has been ‘bringing him to everything’, however she is eager to ensure that her daughter will not have to face the same public scrutiny, even stating that ‘the best situation’ for the parents would be for ‘her to train the girl’ and for ‘him to train the boy’.

Elon’s five other children with ex-wife Justine have largely managed to remain out of the spotlight, although it was revealed in 2018 that all of boys were being educated at a radical, ultra-exclusive school set up by the Tesla founder at his SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California.

The ‘experimental’ school, which is called Ad Astra, meaning ‘to the stars’ in Latin, was set up in 2014. As of 2018, it was being attended by a very small, select group of students, including Elon’s five sons and the offspring of several SpaceX employees.

Although few details about the school’s methods have been revealed, reports suggest that its students are subjected to a host of very unconventional teaching techniques.

Previous reports on Ad Astra state that the children are allowed to skip any subjects they don’t like, spend time building flamethrowers and learn how to ‘defeat evil A.I.s’.

Elon created Ad Astra to ‘exceed traditional school metrics on all relevant subject matter through unique project-based learning experiences,’ according to a previously unreported document filed with the IRS and uncovered by tech-focused publication Ars Technica.

REVEALED: The meaning of Elon Musk and Grimes’ VERY quirky name for newborn daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, whose moniker was inspired by supercomputing, dark matter, Lord of the Rings, and ‘deep space time’

By Erica Tempesta for DailyMail.com

Elon Musk and Grimes were inspired by supercomputing, dark matter, and ‘deep space time’ when choosing their one-of-a-kind name for their newborn daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, whom they are calling ‘Y’ for short.

According to Grimes, the baby girl’s three names are all rooted in science, with one nod to the singer’s love of Lord of the Rings and elven mythology.

Here, FEMAIL reveals the true meaning behind each of the baby girl’s three monikers.

The newborn's first name, Exa, is a reference to the computer term exaFLOPS, the capability of performing one quintillion floating-point operations per second

The newborn’s first name, Exa, is a reference to the computer term exaFLOPS, the capability of performing one quintillion floating-point operations per second

EXA: A nod to supercomputing

Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, explained their newborn’s quirky first name, Exa, is a reference to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS, the capability of performing one quintillion floating-point operations per second.

The decimal prefix ‘exa’ denotes the number one quintillion, which is defined in the U.S. as 1000000000000000000 or 1 followed by 18 zeros.

FLOPS, meanwhile, is an abbreviation of floating-point operations per second. It refers to the theoretical peak performance of computers.

DARK: Inspired by dark matter and ‘the unknown’

Their daughter’s second name, Dark, is a nod to dark matter and ‘the unknown.’

‘People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe,’ Grimes told the magazine.

Dark matter is an invisible substance that is thought to comprise 85 percent of the universe’s mass, according to NASA.

It is thought to be the gravitational glue that holds the galaxies together, though it has never been directly observed by scientists.

The enigmatic material is invisible because it does not absorb, reflect, or emit light.

Astronomers have been able to infer its existence because of its gravitational effects on known matter — any physical substance that has mass and takes up space. A smartphone and the human body are both examples of matter.

‘Shine a torch in a completely dark room, and you will see only what the torch illuminates. That does not mean that the room around you does not exist. Similarly we know dark matter exists but have never observed it directly,’ The European Space Agency explained in a 2013 article.

Finally, Sideræl, which is pronounced sigh-deer-ee-el, is a 'more elven spelling' of sidereal. Sidereal astronomy is a branch of astronomy that studies the origin, nature, and relationship of the stars. A sidereal day (pictured) measures the rotation of Earth relative to the stars

SIDRÆL: An ‘elven’ take on deep space time

Finally, Sideræl, which is pronounced sigh-deer-ee-el, is a ‘more elven spelling’ of sidereal, which Grimes described as ‘the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time.’

Founded by German-British William Herschel, sidereal astronomy is a branch of astronomy that studies the origin, nature, and relationship of the stars.

‘A sidereal day measures the rotation of Earth relative to the stars rather than the sun,’ according to EarthSky. ‘It helps astronomers keep time and know where to point their telescopes without worrying about where Earth is in its orbit.’

A solar day — the time it takes for the Earth to make one complete revolution on its axis in respect to the sun — is around 24 hours, while a sidereal day lasts 23 hours 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds.

Their daughter’s third name is also a reference to Grimes’ favorite Lord of the Rings character, the elf Galadriel, who ‘chooses to abdicate the ring.’

The J. R. R. Tolkien character was one of the great elves from Middle-earth who was known for her transcendent beauty, knowledge, and power.

Actress Cate Blanchett played Galadriel in director Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

REVEALED: Exa Dark Sideræl’s nicknames

Grimes and Musk are calling their baby girl Y for short, similar to how they nicknamed their son, X Æ A-12, ‘X’ after he was born in May 2020.

They were forced to change the spelling of their son’s name in order to comply with California law, which prohibits the use of any numbers or symbols in a name.

Just a few weeks after the baby was born, they revealed that his birth certificate would be registered under the name X AE A-Xii, using the Roman numeral version of the number ’12’ and changing the character æ to AE.

If Musk and Grimes choose to register their newborn daughter’s birth certificate in Texas, they will have to alter the spelling of her name, once again removing the symbol æ in order to comply with state regulations that only allow the use of English characters in a name.

They have also been calling their baby girl Sailor Mars, a reference to the manga cartoon Sailor Moon.

Grimes conceded to Vanity Fair that their unique choice of names is not to everyone’s tastes, admitting that she is prepared for her daughter to one day want to change it.

She added that they might end up changing the name themselves before the interview came out. The mom, who was pushing for the name Odysseus, explained that Exa Dark Sideræl was a compromise, but she thinks it might be boring.

‘I was fighting for Odysseus Musk,’ she told the magazine. ‘A girl named Odysseus is my dream.’
