Guy Sebastian reveals why winning a TV talent competition won’t make you famous anymore

Guy Sebastian has warned TV talent competition hopefuls who may think winning a show guarantees career success.

The Voice Australia coach, 42, has shared his own experience winning Australian Idol in 2003, advising budding singers not to think ‘I’m all set’ if they win a TV show.

Speaking to news.com.au over the weekend, the ARIA Award winning said, ‘After winning Idol, I never had the mentality, “OK, I’m all set!”‘

‘I wanted to be a sponge, learn as much as I could and run with it,’ the Battle Scars hitmaker added.

‘Often, what surprises me is there’s still this mentality: “I’m going on the show and then my life will be set.”‘

Sebastian claimed the industry has gone through some major changes since he won Australian Idol 21 years ago.

‘The world has changed so much. You have to work harder than ever before,’ the singer warned prospective contestants.

‘It’s not the landscape anymore where you’re young and you get signed – and then there’s this whole department that is just focused on creating an aura or an album or a sound for you,’ the father-of-two admitted.

It comes Guy recently opened up about his struggles with mental health and weight loss in a new tell-all interview.

Sebastian discussed his battle to maintain a healthy weight since his rise to stardom during the debut episode of the Mental as Anyone podcast.

‘I was the fat kid on Idol, I was called the fat kid… I was just a bit chubby,’ Guy admitted.

‘I was pretty unhealthy, I would binge eat [and] my approach to losing weight was pretty extreme and I would just get nowhere.’

He told host Jonathon Moran that ‘criticism’ directed at him both externally and internally was behind his unhealthy eating habits.

‘I think what I didn’t do was acknowledge it and that goes for heaps of stuff I’ve had to overcome,’ he said.

‘I realised when I would eat a lot… it was around times of criticism.’

It comes as Guy is set to return to The Voice Australia this year as a coach alongside LeAnn Rimes, Adam Lambert, and Kate Miller-Heidke.

The four stars were all spotted leaving the Channel Seven Sydney offices together early last month.
