Harry Kane is a doubt for Saturday’s clash against Brazil as he continues to recover from an ankle injury.

The England captain suffered the problem whilst playing for Bayern Munich last Saturday after colliding with a goalpost in his side’s win over Darmstadt.

Kane has missed parts of training this week and is receiving treatment at St George’s Park following a scan on Monday.

And there is concern the country’s all-time leading goalscorer will not be fit enough to start against the South American’s this weekend, though there remains hope he could play a fuller part in Tuesday’s clash against Belgium.

England will not take any risks on Kane’s fitness, particularly given both games are friendlies.

If Kane isn’t fit enough to start against Brazil, head coach Gareth Southgate is expected to turn to either Ivan Toney or Ollie Watkins to play as England’s central striker.

There is a growing sense that Southgate, who can only pick 23 players for Euro 2024, will choose one between Toney and Watkins this summer.

Speaking last week, Southgate said: ‘He’s [Toney] got super quality. He plays with tremendous self-belief, great presence, technically a good finisher, the goal he scored at Spurs you can often see forwards in one-versus-one situations with the goalkeeper and you’re not sure, I wasn’t sitting in the stadium thinking this is not going in, there’s no question. He’s a very good finisher.

‘He’s a slightly different profile to Ollie and Harry really but he does have that ability to link the game as well as finish.

‘We have still got to work out whether we take two out-and-out 9s or three and we have got other players in those attacking areas that can play as a 9, [Jarrod] Bowen has done that, [Anthony] Gordon has done that, Bellingham has almost done that as well.

‘So we have to work out what the right balance is further down the line but we thought we should include Ollie and Ivan in particular and keep them feeling part of that group. They both deserve it in different ways.’
