Harry Kane is ‘too old and too expensive’ for Bayern Munich, says Lothar Matthaus

Harry Kane is ‘too old and too expensive’ for Bayern Munich, says Lothar Matthaus as the £100m Tottenham striker weighs up a summer move… but Napoli’s Victor Osimhen would be ‘a good fit’ for the German side

  • Harry Kane could leave Tottenham this summer with one year left on his contract
  • Man United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich have been linked with England striker
  • But Matthaus doesn’t believe 29-year-old Kane would be the right fit for Bayern

Lothar Matthaus believes Harry Kane is ‘too old and too expensive’ for Bayern Munich to sign this summer.

England’s all-time leading goalscorer is expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur for a new challenge with his contract due to expire in 2024.

Kane, 29, has been linked with Bayern as well as Manchester United and Chelsea but would likely cost in excess of £100million to buy.

German legend Matthaus fears this puts him out of Bayern’s price range and believes there would be little re-sale value given his age.

Matthaus instead thinks the German champions should try and sign Napoli hotshot Victor Osimhen instead, despite the Nigerian also expected to fetch a fee over £100m for the Italian side.

Randal Kolo Muani of Eintracht Frankfurt or Werder Bremen’s Niclas Füllkrug potentially better fits.

‘I’m excited to see if a new striker comes along,’ Matthaus wrote in his Sky Sport Deutschland column.

‘Everyone is talking about Victor Osimhen for his sensational performance at Napoli. You never know if he can do that in Munich, but I think he would be a good fit.

‘Randal Kolo Muani may need a little more room and space than a Bayern striker usually has, but he’s also good in the box and could work in Munich.

‘Harry Kane would be too old and too expensive for me.

‘The price-performance ratio could speak for Niclas Füllkrug. He would probably be available for €20-25 million [£17.6m-£22m] and score 25 goals in Munich. He’s already scored 20 times at Werder.’

Kane has enjoyed another fine season for Spurs, scoring 25 goals in all competitions but will once again miss out on silverware.

Last month, he became overtook Wayne Rooney to become England’s record goalscorer, netting his 54th international goal against Italy before making it 55 against Ukraine three days later.

Erik ten Hag’s United are in need of a centre forward who can deliver 25-30 goals per season as they look to build on a positive first year under the Dutchman by challenging for the title.

Staying in England would allow Kane to continue his pursuit of Alan Shearer’s Premier League goals record.

Kane has 206 league goals and is closing in on second-placed Rooney’s tally of 208, with former Blackburn and Newcastle striker Shearer in front on 260.
