Homes and cars pummelled with ICE during spring hailstorm as temperatures plummet to eight degrees

A bizarre spring thunderstorm brought hail and lightening to Sydney on Wednesday.

Residents in the city’s north-west were shocked to discover their backyards covered in ice, which also blanketed cars, roofs and even trampolines.

Pictures and videos shared to social media show properties and streets covered in what initially appears to be snow.

The thunderstorm comes amid a temperamental start to spring.

‘As we got into Spring, we get these warm days, these cold days, these dry days. It’s not really a settled pattern,’ Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott told Daily Mail Australia.

Ms Westcott said the hail was caused by thunderstorms passing through the Hills district, due to a low pressure trough.

‘The low pressure trough is also causing thunderstorms elsewhere, so not just for New South Wales but also southern parts of Queensland as well,’ she said.

Most of Sydney saw showers, but the heaviest rainfall was recorded in the north-west.

Eight millimetres of rain was recorded in Baulkham Hills and 28mm fell in Kings Langley.

Camden Airport recorded 9mm of rain in an hour, causing temperatures to drop by five degrees in 30 minutes.

Temperatures dropped to eight degrees as the thunderstorm ripped through The Ponds, Kellyville and Rouse Hill.

‘There was nearly 200 lightning strikes, when the storms were occurring, most of that was just around that region (Hills region),’ said Ms Westcott.

There are severe storm warnings in place for southeast Queensland and northern parts of NSW as some areas are urged to prepare for damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain.

Ms Westcott said the hail wasn’t uncommon as it can hit at anytime of the year, but she drew attention to Sydney’s changing weather conditions.
