How CELIBACY has become all the rage on Tiktok:

The pandemic undoubtedly put a dampener on the sex lives of singletons – with millions not able to date casually due to Covid restrictions.

But for some lockdown was a welcome break from ‘hook-up culture’ leading to a surge in the number of young people practicing celibacy.

Gen Z and millennials are less sexually active now than young people were 20 years ago, with celibacy among 25 to 34-year-olds doubling since 2002, according to a recent study.

And many of those who practice celibacy are sharing the ‘benefits’ on TikTok – with sexless 20-somethings revealing they haven’t been intimate in years – claiming it gives them a ‘clearer mind’ ‘spiritual growth’ and rids them of ‘soul ties’.

These videos aren’t related to evangelicalism – or any religious preaching. In fact, scrolling on the #celibacytok and #celibacy – which both have millions of views – sees clips full of feminist women sharing how they have decided to not ‘let a man invade their peace’.

Influencer Billie Emali, who shares tips on staying celibate said that she ‘has a tendency to pick trash men’ and ‘salutes all women who are having fun and getting it’.

She added in the comments of one video that’s racked up thousands of views:  ‘Healing is so important. Take care of yourself first, everything else will fall into place’.

In one clip spiritual activist Tera Chantelle reveals the benefits of celibacy saying she doesn’t experience ‘STDs, pregnancy scares, stress or drama’ and also has a higher self worth and more healthy, platonic relationships.

‘I’ve been thinking bout doing this. I keep picking trash men and self-sabotage when I find a good guy. I need start loving myself and work on healing,’ said another in the comments.

Jordan Jeppe an influencer from Mexico explained that for her celibacy goes ‘far beyond abstaining from sex’.

In a now viral clip she explains: ‘Real work goes beyond cutting out the lingering connections to men.

‘I deleted Instagram accounts and cut boundaries with my exes. But the real work was seeing how my past partners resembled my emotionally unavailable father.

‘It was going back and exploring the first time I was shamed for being sexual. I questioned why I feared being vulnerable with another person.

‘And I questioned what my ideal partner should look like. You see my definition of celibacy goes beyond sex. Its about exploring yourself, your past, your future’.

Many preaching celibacy believe that energy is transferred through sex –  saying that those who have had intercourse are your ‘soul ties’.

Some even claim -purely anecdotally – that not having sex has helped hormone levels, cleared skin, and even helped their hair to grow.

Victoria de Vall, an influencer who posts videos ‘helping women’ in one video dances in a bikini as she reveals she’s been celibate for 17 months.

She adds that it helps her learn to ‘be empowered and be her highest self’ and that only through celibacy can she be sexual in a way that truly honours herslef.

British holistic coach Kieran Pollitt explains in another video that he began his celibacy journey after meeting a friend who had been travelling for eight months without and sexual contact.

He said that he decided to ‘choose himself’ and ‘put himself first’ and from that day decided not to have sex, watch porn, or masturbate.

Meanwhile, another woman who goes by Fumi says that she believes women are arriving at abstinence without ‘religious motivation’ because ‘sex doesn’t serve them’ and they’re realising they’re in a time where ‘objectification of women has become so mainstream’ that they don’t want to expose themselves.

Many users say that sex ‘takes time away from themselves’ while others even claim it helps them spiritually.

Anyone who has spent much time on TikTok will have seen videos about manifesting and spirituality – and Celibacy Tok is no exception.

One user, who shares videos under  the moniker – theselfcarevibraton  was the benefits included ‘Self worth and self confidence restore.

She adds she now has a ‘healthy relationship with my yoni, amazing job that I love, family and friends that love me, clear skin and healthy hair, and banging body, no one stressing me’.

There are proven medical benefits of celibacy – other than no risk of pregnancy or STIs.

In 2020, a study of 10,000 Americans by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden revealed that the proportion of men aged 25 to 34 who had not had sex in 12 months has doubled from 7.0 per cent in 2002 to 14.1 per cent in 2018.

For women, celibacy has also increased, now affecting 12.6 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds, up from seven per cent in 2002.

Researchers suggest that one explanation for the trend could be the vast array of digital entertainment options now available to young people – from Facebook and Twitter to YouTube and Netflix.

Domestic entertainment has exploded in the last decade, and experts say being engrossed in TV or smartphones could leave fewer opportunities to be intimate.

It could also be due to a rapid cultural overhaul in western civilisation, with young people taking longer to grow into adulthood generally, experts say.

Study author Dr Peter Ueda suggests that the supply of online entertainment may compete with sexual activity for the attention of young people.

Moreover, the introduction of smartphones may have made human interactions more difficult.
