Huge fire engulfs skyscraper in Kuwait as thick black smoke pours into the air and 2,500 bank workers flee in terror

  • The fire broke out in Kuwait City on Thursday, causing thick black smoke 
  • The building is owned by the bank of Kuwait and was being constructed
  • Firefighters had put out 90 per cent of the fire by 4pm (1pm UK time)

A skyscraper under construction to become the headquarters of the National Bank of Kuwait has caught fire, sending 2,500 workers fleeing from the flames.

The fire broke out in Kuwait City on Thursday, sending thick black smoke up into the sky.

The bank on Twitter described the blaze as a ‘partial fire’ and said firefighters had extinguished 90 percent of it. There were no reports of injures.

It is not clear what caused the blaze and Kuwaiti civil defense officials did not immediately comment on it.

The 62-story tower will be some 980ft tall on completion.
