  • The parents of a 4-month-old girl found dead in a Spotsylvania County motel room Friday have been charged with felony child abuse
  • Cherie Danielle Sullivan and James Edward Cressel, both 31 of Spotsylvania, were arrested following an investigation

The parents of a four-month-old girl found dead in a Virginia motel room have been charged with child abuse.

31-year-olds Cherie Danielle Sullivan and James Edward Cressel were arrested this week following the Friday discovery of their daughter.

Court records say the girl’s parents gave ‘vague, differing stories’ about how their daughter was found dead in a portable playpen in the motel room.

The girl was apparently found with a couple of bruises on her forehead.

Records say the girl had visible bruises on her forehead, and the parents’ timeline of events don’t match with the girl’s potential time of death.

Two other children, ages 3 and 15 months, were also in the room.

Records also say Sullivan told authorities she and her husband are addicted to opiates and the baby tested positive for opiates at birth according to the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star.

Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office. Capt. C.A. Carey said the investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible.

Among the items seized under the authority of the search warrant were pills, pill bottles, cellphones, bedding and clothes. Sullivan and Cressel are being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

It’s unclear if Sullivan or Cressel have a lawyer to contact for comment.
