Irish boy, three, is critically ill after he was found unconscious in a swimming pool on holiday in Spain

  • The boy, believed to be three, was pulled from pool in Cabo Roig near Alicante
  •  He was spotted floating by a passerby at around 9am and was resuscitated 
  •  The boy, believed to be from Cork, was airlifted to  hospital and is on life support

An Irish boy is fighting for his life after he was found unconscious in a swimming pool while on holiday in Spain.

The boy, believed to be three years old, was today pulled from the pool in an apartment complex in Cabo Roig near Alicante.

He was spotted floating in the pool by a passerby at around 9am, before being airlifted to hospital.

Medics found the tot, believed to be from Cork, ‘very cold’ but resuscitated him at the scene, local media reports.

A local doctor and air ambulance crew reportedly spent an hour by the pool attempting to stablise him before he was taken to Alicante General hospital at around 10.30am.

He is currently on life support where he is surrounded by his devastated family.

The boy was on his holiday with his grandparents in the tourist hotspot when the shocking incident occurred.

He had eaten breakfast this morning before his family became worried about his whereabouts. 

The Judicial Police of the Civil Guard has taken charge of the investigation.  

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said: ‘The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade stands ready to provide consular assistance to any Irish citizen in distress abroad.’
