Is Coldplay’s FIFTH headline set at Glastonbury their final show? Iconic band will make history when they take to the Pyramid Stage – but Chris Martin insists next album will be their last

Coldplay’s headline performance at Glastonbury could be their swansong after Chris Martin confirmed the band’s next album will be their last.

The band are scheduled to appear at Somerset’s Worthy Farm in June alongside fellow Pyramid Stage performers Dua Lipa, SZA and Shania Twain.

But fans of the four-piece, who formed in 1997, remain uncertain about what the performance signifies after lead singer Martin revealed they will cease recording music following the release of their tenth studio album, Moon Music, in 2025.

Speaking to Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2 in 2021, he said: ‘Well I know I can tell you, our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour.

‘Maybe we’ll do some collaborative things but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then.’

Martin had previously admitted the band would be step away from the studio during an interview with NME, but gave their album haul a more generous estimate.

‘We’re going to make 12 albums,’ he said. ‘Because it’s a lot to pour everything into making them. I love it and it’s amazing, but it’s very intense too.

‘I feel like because I know that challenge is finite, making this music doesn’t feel difficult, it feels like, “This is what we’re supposed to be doing”.

‘I don’t think that’s what we’ll do. I know that’s what we’ll do in terms of studio albums.’

Formed in London, Coldplay released their debut studio album, Parachutes, in 2000, spawning the classic singles Shiver, Yellow, Trouble and Don’t Panic.

The debut was was a critical and commercial success on the heels of positive reviews.

Certified 9x platinum in the UK and 2x platinum in the U.S., Parachutes went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2002.

Coldplay will become the first band to headline Glastonbury five times when they perform over the summer.

Overall, the band has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling musical artists, and they’ve won seven Grammys out of 36 nominations.
