Is Gossp Girl coming back with the original cast after reboot series was axed? Fans are sent into frenzy by cryptic tweet from official account

Gossip Girl fans have been sent into a frenzy over a cryptic tweet that suggests the cast of the original series could be reuniting.

The official Gossip Girl twitter account shared a photo of the six lead actors from the hit teen drama alongside a ‘welcome back’ message.

It read: ‘Welcome back, Upper East Siders. After a long time away, I see it didn’t take much time for you to dirty up the clean slates I gave you.’

Fans quickly flooded the comment section demanding to know what the tweet meant and if it hinted at a possible Gossip Girl reunion.

One user demanded: ‘WHAT DOES IT MEAN’ while another said: ‘If this has nothing to do with THE CAST IN THIS PICTURE, you can keep it’.

Another added: ‘I would die for a more “adult” Gossip Girl with the adult original cast. Marriage, kids, inheritance, everything.’

The original show, which ran for six seasons, followed the lives of privileged teenagers attending an exclusive private school in Manhattan and the mysterious blogger that anonymously dished out their scandalous secrets.

Based on the novel series of the same name, it starred Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Taylor Momsen, Chace Crawford, Penn Badgley and Ed Westwick.

A reboot series with a new cast of characters premiered on HBO Max, however it didn’t have the same impact as the original and was cancelled after two seasons.

Actor Ed Westwick previously told MailOnline he would be more than happy to reprise his role as bad boy Chuck Bass in a future reunion.

He revealed: ‘I wouldn’t say no. It would be cool! I don’t know if that’s a direction they could go in though!

‘It blows my mind and it feels crazy to have been a part of something so big,’ Ed confessed. ‘It was a big part of my life back then and it still is, and now with the reboot a whole generation get to enjoy it.’

The fanbase certainly hasn’t wavered over the years, with Ed admitting: ‘People come up to me and call me Chuck all the time.

‘It’s hard when you’re in someone’s home on their TV each week for five and a half years it’s a very personal experience and people think they know you.’

It’s an experience shared by his former co-stars, who Ed still keeps in touch with at times.

He revealed that earlier this year he saw Chace Crawford – who played Nate Archibald – for the first time in five years and it was as though no time had passed.

‘We picked up just like that!’ he explained. ‘We were cracking jokes like we were 25 again.’

Since the show ended in 2012, the cast have kept busy with other projects.
