Jofra Archer continued his preparations for next month’s T20 World Cup with a match-winning all-round performance at the weekend to help Barbados club side Wildey through to their domestic T20 final.

Archer was recently named in England’s 15-man provisional squad both for the World Cup and the four-match T20 series against Pakistan that precedes it.

He wore his England helmet while hammering 54 not out from just 20 balls, including five sixes, to help his team to an imposing 191 for six against Carlton. It was his third successive half-century.

He then took three for 16 to set up a 33-run win and ease Wildey into the final of the Barbados Cricket Association’s T20 Cup, which takes place after he has flown home.

One of his wickets went viral as a Carlton batsman attempted to chop him through point, only to lose his off stump, which cartwheeled spectacularly out of the ground.

Archer, who has not played international cricket since March 2023 because of a troublesome right elbow, will begin his World Cup build-up in earnest during the Pakistan series, which starts at Headingley on May 22.

His last last international appearance came on March 14, 2023 and he has since has recovered from a long-term injury to his right elbow, and will use the Pakistan series to gear up for England’s title defence in the Caribbean, starting on June 4 against Scotland in Barbados.

He could prove to be key for England in the coming months, with Mail Sport’s Nasser Hussain highlighting his importance.

The cricket expert believes that Archer is so valuable to England’s chances of winning the World Cup as  Rob Key and the management are taking a softly-softly approach to their star.

It remains to be seen as to whether he can continue his positive recovery from injury as England will be hoping they can rely on their star.
