John Fury labels David Haye ‘an idiot’ after backing Deontay Wilder to shock his son Tyson

David Haye has been slammed as ‘an idiot’ by Tyson Fury’s father John after his failed prediction that the Gypsy King would be shocked by Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas on Saturday night. 

Fury survived two knockdowns against the Bronze Bomber before battering his rival in the later rounds to secure an 11th round knockout against his nemesis and retain his WBC world title.

Former heavyweight champion Haye had been working as a BT Sport pundit for the fight and was of the belief that Wilder had been overlooked and was capable of springing a surprise, leaving Fury less than impresed with his ability as a pundit – calling him ‘an idiot’ and ‘a hater’.

‘I’m not even gonna discuss that, that man’s an idiot,’ he told talkSport. ‘I don’t know why BT send him out there, he’s just a hater.

‘He’s a hater, he’s got nothing good to say, he’s not a good pundit, he gets everything wrong and it’s all about David Haye.

‘I’m not knocking his achievements, he did a brilliant job as world champion, but he needs to grow up and get a personality.

‘I’ve got no respect for that man at all, none.’

Haye has been calling for an all-British match-up with Fury – who he was set to face in 2013 before pulling out with injury – but John has told his son to avoid all other offers and focus on an undisputed bout with Oleskandr Usyk – who defeat Anthony Joshua last month and will face the Brit in a rematch next year. 

‘He’s gotta go look for Usyk or nothing, in my idea,’ he added. ‘It’s Usyk next, or nothing. I wouldn’t bother with the rest of them, they’re not in Tyson’s class.

‘Would Dillian Whyte deal with Deontay Wilder? No. So why would they wanna put him in with my son and get him knocked out?

‘Tyson can’t get up for them kind of fights. For me, I’ve told him, Usyk or don’t bother.’

Speaking to BT before the weigh-in in Las Vegas, Haye had said: ‘I think Wilder has been completely underrestimated. I personally don’t believe [Fury’s] training has gone anywhere near as good as the second fight. He had no motivation for it. 

‘He’s not the type of guy to go into a fight with someone he knows in his heart he can beat and train and push for it. He’s not that guy. You’ve got someone in Fury who’s ill-prepared and Wilder who has had surgery and is now bigger and stronger. I think we’re going to get an upset.’ 

Haye’s prediction won’t have gone down well with Fury – who he signalled as the only fighter he would consider getting back in the ring with, saying he ‘genuinely’ believed he would beat him and insisted his challenge was serious after the Gypsy King emerged victorious against Wilder.

‘It’s 100 per cent serious,’ Haye told iFL TV when asked about wanting to take on the WBC and Ring Magazine title holder. ‘I said the only person I’d put my body through a comeback for would be for the No 1 heavyweight on the planet.

‘There’s no reason why I’d punish myself and do what I need to do to put myself into a position to give myself any type of chance if it isn’t for the big one. And it doesn’t get any bigger than that, I’d be like a 1000/1 underdog for good reason. 

‘Hopefully when Team Fury sort of crunch the numbers… something’s gonna happen in the next two months where they’re gonna be looking for an opponent. 

‘I know how big time boxing works, when he works out what money is generated with a Hayemaker fight versus any of the other options, although they may on paper be more respectable, he knows it’s out there.’
