John Ibrahim is overseas as his brother tries $2.2M bail

Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim is travelling overseas as his younger brother Fadi Ibrahim fights to scrape together a $2.2 million bond.

Fadi’s solicitor Anthony Jeffries told a Sydney court this week he does not know if Mr Ibrahim will fund the 43-year-old’s bail because he ‘is overseas and won’t be making any comment,’ according to The Daily Telegraph.

Fadi and youngest brother Michael, 39, were arrested in Dubai on August 8 along with four other men in one of Australia’s biggest organised crime stings.

The pair were extradited back to Australia on Sunday.

Fadi is accused of two money laundering offences: one of providing $800,000 towards illegally importing tobacco and one of receiving $1.6 million from the proceeds of that operation.

Unlike Michael, Fadi has not been charged in relation to an alleged international plot to import narcotics worth $810 million.

Michael, charged with conspiring to import and attempting to import a commercial quantity of ecstasy, has not applied for bail and will remain behind bars.

On Monday, Fadi was granted bail with a list conditions including live in the house he shares with wife Shayda in Weonga Road, Dover Heights.

Another condition is that one or more ‘acceptable’ people deposit the $2.2 million.

With his financial assets frozen, it is not clear how Fadi will raise the money.

His mother Wahiba has offered $1.5 million secured by her palatial home at Merrylands, in Sydney’s west. Wife Shayda provided an affidavit.

People close to the Ibrahims told The Daily Telegraph it is likely the money will be raised by Fadi’s friends.

Magistrate Les Mabbutt said the 43-year-old, who has been in custody at the Sydney Police Centre since his weekend extradition, would ‘effectively’ be living under house arrest once the surety was lodged.

He cannot leave the property other than to make court appearances or to attend legal conferences or medical appointments, both of which would require 48 hours’ notice to police.

In the event of a medical emergency, Mr Mabbutt said he would expect Fadi to leave his home in an ambulance.

The six-bedroom, five-bathroom home bought for just over $4 million in 2013 has an estimated current value of at least $6 million and is just four blocks away from John’s $8 million home in George Street.

Mr Mabbutt said due to delays in the court system it could be 18 months to two years before Fadi faced any trial.
