Karen Gillan lands the role she was ‘born to play’ – as Groundskeeper Willie’s girl in The Simpsons

She became a Hollywood star though her portrayal of Nebula, a blue skinned alien in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

But now Karen Gillan will turn a fetching shade of yellow for her dream role – in an episode of The Simpsons.

The Inverness-born actress plays Maisie, the Scottish love interest of show favourite Groundskeeper Willie in the animated series.

The episode, called Ae Bonny Romance, sees The Simpsons swap Springfield for Scotland after Willie is kidnapped and taken back to his homeland. 

Ms Gillan will be joined in the show by Scots star David Tennant, a fellow Doctor Who veteran, who voices a character called Pa MacWheldon.

Ms Gillan, 36, told of her delight, saying on social media: ‘I can finally announce the role I was born to play. That’s right folks, I’m Groundskeeper Willie’s new Scottish love interest in The Simpsons. So honoured to join this legendary show.’ 

The actress also posted a photo on Instagram showing her red-haired character dancing with Willie. 

A description of the episode, which airs in the US on Sunday, reads: ‘When Groundskeeper Willie is kidnapped to Scotland, Bart and the Simpsons follow – only to discover that what awaits is Homer’s worst nightmare.’

Ms Gillan shot to fame when she landed the part of Doctor Who’s assistant Amy Pond in 2010 after dropping out of drama school. She left the BBC show in 2013.

She is now one of the most-sought after names in the film industry after starring as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero films.
