Kate wears the trousers in a McQueen statement suit: Femail’s Fashion Verdict as the Princess of Wales steps out in the US

Arriving in Boston yesterday, the Princess of Wales looked like she meant business.

Not going for a flashy entrance, she kept things pared back with a £1,960 navy trouser suit by British designer Alexander McQueen.

A favourite of the royal, Kate has worn the label on numerous occasions, most notably choosing the design house’s creative director Sarah Burton to fashion her iconic wedding dress.

Crafted from structured crepe, the £1,490 blazer creates a fitted and flattering silhouette, thanks to its angular pockets and sharp padded shoulders.

The Princess is clearly a fan of the suit, as this is the third time she’s stepped out in the design. She wore it in white on the royal tour to Jamaica in March and in pink in June to talk to ministers about her early years work in London.

Developing and sticking to a successful outfit formula is not a new concept for Kate, who often wears — and re-wears — the same styles in different shades.

She completed the look with another firm favourite, her Gianvito Rossi ‘Gianvito 105’ suede pumps.

As for her jewellery, she selected her late mother-in-law Princess Diana’s sapphire and diamond earrings. Notably, Diana paired the earrings with a Dior silk dress — also in navy — on one of her last visits to America, to attend the Met Gala in New York in 1996.

At the time, Diana was reported to have worried about embarrassing William with her revealing neckline. However, there was no chance of Kate doing that with her high-neck polo neck.

While some may say the outfit was boringly business formal, Kate was clearly making a statement about the couple’s priorities ahead of their first overseas trip since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, as they attempt to establish themselves as a streamlined, modern monarchy.
