Keanu Reeves teases John Wick: Chapter 4 during CCXP 22 in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Keanu Reeves is already in promo mode for John Wick: Chapter 4, more than three months ahead of the premiere of the latest installment in the action-thriller franchise.

The longtime leading man, who plays career hitman Jardani Jovanovich, otherwise known as John Wick, took part in a panel discussion at CCXP 22 (formerly Comic Con Experience), held at the Sao Paulo Expo in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Saturday.

The promotional event comes about three weeks after it was confirmed that Reeves will play John Wick a fifth time in the spin-off film, Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas in the lead role.

Promo mode: Keanu Reeves, 58, attended a panel discussion at CCXP 22 (formerly Comic Con Experience), at the Sao Paulo Expo in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Saturday to discuss the John Wick film franchise, which is set to drop the fourth installment in March 2023

Reeves, 58, looked to be relishing in his time on stage discussing his experience playing John Wick in four films with fans and journalists.

Dressed in a black suit with a matching t-shirt and brown boots, the actor got animated with his body language while telling some stories, which at one point saw him get on his hands and knees on the floor.

It turns out the four-month shoot for John Wick: Chapter 4 wrapped just over a year ago, in late October 2021, and has been in post-production ever since.

The cast and crew ended up shooting predominantly in Berlin, Germany and Paris, France, along with some additional work in Japan and New York City.

As post-production winds down, and the promotional push for JW4 kicks into overdrive, de Armas started filming the spin-off in Prague three weeks ago.

The Cuban-born actress takes over the role of Rooney from Unity Phelan, who previously played the character in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019).

Newcomer to the franchise, Len Wiseman, is serving as the director of Ballerina, working from a screenplay by Shay Hatten and Emerald Fennell.

All four of the John Wick films were directed by Chad Stahelski, while Derek Kolstad served as writer of the first three installments, although he shared credit for chapter 3 with Shay Hatten, Chris Collins and Marc Abrams.

Hatten would also write the pending chapter 4 of the franchise with Emerald Fennell.

The John Wick franchise is considered both a critical and commercial success, with a collective gross of the first three films topping $587 million worldwide.

In an unusual trend for Hollywood, the original John Wick (2014) wasn’t a blockbuster at the box office, earning $86 million on a budget of between $20-30 million, which was good enough to greenlight a sequel.

But then, John Wick – Chapter 2 (2017) almost doubled the first film, bringing in $171.5 million against a budget of $40 million.

Fans would offer even more support for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), grossing $327.3 million at the worldwide box office and a budget of $75 million.

The fourth installment in the franchise upped the budget to $90 million, but only time will tell whether it will continue the upward trend in terms of box office receipts.

Along with Reeves, the cast of John Wick: Chapter 4 also includes Ian McShane (Winston Scott), Anjelica Huston (The Director) and Lance Reddick (Charo), all reprising their roles from previous installments.

All four stars are also returning for Ballerina, which has de Armas playing the ballerina-assassin as she goes on the hunt for the assassins who killed her family.

So far, there’s no official word on when the spin-off will premiere in theaters.
