Kerry Washington takes the plunge in very low-cut black top and striped maxi skirt at the American Son screening and reception in Hollywood

She originated the role in an acclaimed Broadway play which wrapped early this year, and now she’s promoting the film version premiering soon on Netflix.

Actress Kerry Washington was on hand at the NeueHouse in Hollywood, California on Sunday night in support of American Son, a taut drama in which she plays the concerned mother of a missing teen in South Florida.

The Scandal star, 42, wore a deep scoop-necked black sleeveless top that plunged down her chest, and she paired it with a stylish graphic black-and-white striped maxi skirt.

Kerry parted her hair at the middle and sported braids on each side, which she pulled back in a low ponytail that flared out in curls over her shoulder.

The actress wore soft makeup for the evening, featuring a glossy and shiny red lip.

She completed her look with high black heels.

Washington attended the event and posed for photos with her director for the film, Kenny Leon.

The pair also spoke onstage at the event, moderated by entertainment journalist Ashley Lee of the Los Angeles Times.

Most of the principal team from the Broadway play came on board for the film adaptation, including Washington, Tony Award-winning director Leon, as well as the other three members of the stageplay’s cast: Jeremy Jordan, Steven Pasquale and Eugene Lee.

Earlier this month, Netflix dropped a new trailer for the movie version of American Son, a story that explores issues of race, bias and policing.

Like in the play, the action of the film takes place in a Florida police station in the early hours of a rainy morning.

As she’s grilled by a young police officer (played by Jordan) about her son – what he looks like, what his street name is – she becomes increasingly frustrated at the assumptions being made about her family.

American Son is due on Netflix on November 1.
