Kyle Sandilands takes brutal swipe at Peter Stefanovic over Today show mass sacking

Kyle Sandilands took a brutal swipe at Peter Stefanovic on Thursday morning. 

During a no-holds-barred interview on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, the shock jock blamed Peter for the mass sackings at the Today show in December. 

‘I still to this day think it’s terrible that they wiped out the entire news team at the Today show because of you,’ said Kyle, as Peter squirmed. 

Kyle was insinuating that Peter, his wife Sylvia Jeffreys and brother Karl Stefanovic lost their jobs because of the ‘Ubergate’ scandal in early 2018, which started when Peter was overheard making a rather indiscreet phone call in the back of an Uber.

‘You’re probably right,’ responded Peter, which prompted Kyle to ask: ‘You must have copped some s**t? Your brother went, your wife went, you, everyone.’

KIIS FM co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson added that ‘even Richard Wilkins went’ after he was bumped to Today Extra, with Kyle joking: ‘He was past his time anyway!’

Peter replied: ‘Someone likened [the Today sackings] it to the Red Wedding from Game of Thrones. Don’t worry, I felt all that shame… thanks for that.’

Before moving on, Kyle joked about the fact Peter has since landed a job at Sky News while Sylvia and Karl have yet to return to breakfast television. 

‘Here you are, you’ve landed on your feet over on Sky News. Not so much for your wife or your brother,’ said Kyle.

Last year, former Weekend Today star Peter and news anchor Sylvia jumped in an Uber in March, and spoke to his older brother Karl on speaker-phone.

The driver’s ‘recollections’ of the conversation were splashed over two editions of New Idea in March and April. 

It was widely reported the driver had recorded the conversation, although he denied that in his interview.

During the conversation, Peter complained about his role on Weekend Today and the Stefanovic brothers also criticised Nine staffers and executives.

‘I hate working news, I’m dying on the inside and it makes me feel horrible,’ the Uber driver allegedly overheard Peter telling his older brother.

‘The life is draining out of me. I’m so much better than this and can do so much more, it’s the worst four days each week and I should be doing more.’

His anchor brother Karl suggested he cheer himself up with a modest $60,000 pay rise – and unloaded on his co-star Georgie Gardner.

New Idea was told: ‘(Karl) said she didn’t have enough opinions and he wanted her to step up. He actually sounded angry’.

Nine months after the conversation was published, Nine announced that Peter was departing the station, with Karl’s 14-year stint on the Today show quickly ending.

News anchor Sylvia was ‘redeployed’ to A Current Affair, with entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins bumped from Today to Today Extra.
