Lynda Carter, 72, looks like she’s barely aged a day since hanging up her Wonder Woman leotard as she attends the 25th Annual Mark Twain Prize For American Humour

Time stood still on Sunday as Lynda Carter attended the 25th Annual Mark Twain Prize For American Humour In Washington D.C.

The 72-year old actress, best known for her iconic role as Wonder Woman, looked like she’d barely aged since hanging up her leotard as she greeted onlookers at the annual ceremony.

Carter captured the hearts, minds and in some cases fantasies of teenagers across the globe thanks to her portrayal of the legendary, lycra-clad superhero, a role she played for four years from 1975.

Making her way into the Kennedy Centre on Sunday evening, the actress opted for a comparatively demure black trouser-suit and matching mule-heel shoes as she prepared to honour actor and comedian Kevin Hart – the award’s latest recipient.

Presented by Wells Fargo, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognises individuals who have impacted American society in a similar fashion to the 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, better known as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn creator Mark Twain.

Carter’s appearance at the event comes after she discussed how she ages gracefully by avoiding the Hollywood trend for cosmetic procedures.

‘People still recognize me all the time as Wonder Woman,’ she told People. ‘I don’t know that I’ve changed too dramatically.’

Carter noted that she hasn’t had facelifts that could drastically change her appearance.

‘I don’t cut my face, so I probably look just myself, but older,’ she said.

‘And the reason I’ve never had any facial surgery is just because I’m afraid. It’s scary, because we’ve all seen some bad ones.’

Carter also revealed she is still grieving her late husband, lawyer and video game executive Robert Altman, more than three years after his death at the age of 73 following complications from a medical procedure.

‘He was the great love of my life,’ she said of Altman, with whom she was married for 37-years and raised two children, Jessica and James.

‘I think of him every day. There’s so much of my day to day where I find myself thinking, “Oh Robert will know.”

‘Or if I’m on a flight, I still expect him to text to ask, “Did you land safely? Was everything alright?”‘

The actress revealed she has also written a song for him, titled Letters From Earth.

‘The soul of the song is about how you miss a person so much, because they’re such a presence in your life that it’s almost impossible to imagine that you won’t physically see them again in this life,’ she explained.

‘You wonder, ‘How can I communicate with you? Where are you? You didn’t just die — there’s too much of you left on this earth, too many people that love you.”’
