Man hiding from police calls for help after getting stuck

A Utah man who fled arrest and hid from police had to call 911 to be rescued after he got stuck in his hiding spot.

Shane Owen, 46, was spotted in the Woods Cross area of Salt Lake City on Monday after authorities received a tip.

Owen had multiple warrants out for his arrest for crimes including burglary, identity fraud and drug possession. 

When Salt Lake City police attempted to pull Owen’s vehicle over he fled, leading them on a chase at around 10.30pm Monday. 

Police spiked his tires in front of an abandoned church and Owen went inside.

Six hours later he called dispatchers for help at 5am on Tuesday after he accidentally locked himself in a church’s basement boiler room, according to Salt Lake City police.

Owen can be heard on a recorded 911 call telling the dispatcher that he is ready to turn himself in, but that he doesn’t want to come out because they will ‘f***ing shoot’ him.

He eventually caves and admits that he is in fact stuck.

‘They’ve had me tied up here all night,’ he tells the dispatcher. ‘I’m not going to be able to put my hands up and climb out.’

After confirming that he didn’t have any weapons on him, a SWAT team was able to rescue Owens from the room. The found drugs in his possession.

Owen was booked on his outstanding warrants for retaliation against a witness, drug distribution and identity fraud. 

He was charged with multiple counts of felony drug distribution in May, according to court records.

In June, Owen was charged with threatening his brother for going to police after Owen stole his brother’s identity, including his Social Security number, according to court documents obtained by the Deseret News.
