Man under police guard in hospital after causing car crash

A man is under police guard in hospital after being arrested for allegedly going on a rampage and crashing three cars, assaulting a police officer and breaking an 80-year-old man’s nose.

Reece Condon, 34, from Pacific Pines in Queensland, was charged with the string of offences, 7 News reports. 

Police allege that Mr Condon, who was driving a black Holden Colorado utility, collided with two vehicles stopped at a red light in Elanora around 5.40pm on Friday.

Mr Condon allegedly exited his truck and assaulted an 80-year-old man who was driving one of the vehicles he crashed into, breaking his nose and leaving him with contusions to his eye and head.

Police said he then stole a green Toyota sedan and was involved in a number of hit and run offences on the M1 near Robina before fleeing on foot to nearby bushland. 

He was tracked down by the dog squad on Stadium Avenue before resisting arrest, allegedly assaulting a senior constable in the process.

A second officer was called to help restrain the man. 

The police officer who was alledegly assaulted did not require medical attention. 

Mr Condon was treated at the scene and transported to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he remains under police guard in a stable condition, receiving treatment to injuries believed to have been sustained in the traffic crash.

The 34-year-old has been charged with one count each of serious assault of a person over 60, serious assault of a police officer, dangerous operation of a vehicle and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

He was unable to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Saturday due to his injuries but will front a Magistrate on Monday. 

The 80-year-old driver who was assaulted was transported to John Flynn Hospital. 

The Gold Coast Crime Investigation Branch continues to investigate the incident and further charges are expected to be laid.
