Marcus Morris Sr. breaks down in tears as 76ers forward gives emotional speech after receiving key to the city of Philadelphia: ‘I would be nothing’

Sixers forward Marcus Morris Sr. could not hold back tears after receiving the key to the city of Philadelphia on Thursday night.

Surrounded by friends and family, Morris delivered a speech in which he outlined his pride at being a son of the City of Brotherly Love. 

‘I represent my city anywhere I go,’ Morris said. ‘This means a lot to me.’

‘I know they are saying thank you to me, I’m saying thank you to y’all. I would be nothing without the city. Any team I’ve ever been on, anytime I’ve been announced, they always say: “From north Philadelphia.”

Morris’ emotional comments drew applause and shouts of ‘Philly’ while the 34-year-old caught his breath and wiped tears from his face. 

Morris (L) mentioned that his twin brother Markieff (R) also deserved the same recognition 

He went on to insist that his twin brother Markieff, who plays for the Dallas Mavericks, deserved the same recognition. Together, the twins frequently give back to the Philadelphia community through their Family Over Everything Foundation. 

‘This is the first time I’ve been in here without my brother, he deserves (this) exactly as much as I,’ Morris said. ‘That’s my guy.’

Markieff watched the presentation on FaceTime, as seen on a clip posted on social media.  

Morris began his basketball career playing high school hoops at Philadelphia’s Prep Charter. 

Morris landed back in Philadelphia in the same trade that sent James Harden to the Clippers 

From there, he went on to play college ball in Kansas for three years before getting drafted by the Houston Rockets in 2011. 

Morris went on to play for the Suns, Pistons, Celtics, Knicks and Clippers before he landed with the Sixers in the same trade that sent James Harden to Los Angeles. 

Morris is averaging 6.5 points and 2.7 rebounds as a role player for the 76ers this season.

He joins the likes of Shawn Marion and Stephen Curry as NBA players who have been given keys to their respective hometowns.
