And even wine goes vegan! M&S experts reveal the wine trends we’ll see in 2022 – including plant-based tipples and an explosion in English Sparkling wine

M&S winemakers and buyers have pulled together their top trends for what’s going to be hot in 2022.

Vegan wines

In January 2020 M&S pledged to have an entirely vegan own-label wine range on shelf by the end of 2022, and they’re on track.

The final wines from the 2021 vintage making the switch to entirely vegan ingredients. Currently over 95 per cent of M&S wines on shelf are already vegan friendly, and the final bottles will gradually make the switch over the next few months.

Winemaker Sue Daniels told FEMAIL: ‘It has been a long process, starting back in 1996 when we first started to move the range to being suitable for vegetarians.

‘Over these years we have worked closely with our supplier partners to make this happen – we have introduced many new wines during this time encouraging wineries to try different winemaking techniques to ensure that we maintain quality while responding to our customers’ requests. We have worked hard to hit this target before the end of 2022 and we’re proud to be able to offer a fully vegan wine offering to our customers.’

A bumper year for English Sparkling wine

With warnings about Champagne shortages and as the hunt for Prosecco alternatives continues, English wine is perfectly placed to become the toast of 2022.

Winemaker, Sue Daniels told FEMAIL: ‘we’ve been making fantastic sparkling wines closer to home for some time now – with more and more expertise in the English Wineries and a touch more warmth in our climate, it’s a really exciting time for winemaking and a great time to try what’s on offer.’

Down under on the up

Australia is definitely one to watch! A wave of new arrivals has got the M&S buyers excited.

Lizzy Unite, M&S buyer told FEMAIL: ‘Australia has historically been really strong for accessible wines. This has been great, as customers have grown to love it as a wine destination and have become familiar with what it has to offer as a country.

‘Now we’re getting to the point where there is more recognition of the Australian wine regions themselves and this brings an opportunity to explore some of the more premium producers in this fantastic country. We have some great new wines for our customers to discover, so enjoy our top picks below!’

Sustainable sips

In September 2021, M&S reset its sustainability action plan, Plan A, with a pledge to cut its carbon footprint by a third by 2025, as part of the commitment to be fully net zero by 2040.

Belinda Kleinig, M&S winemaker, told FEMAILE, ‘when it comes to the wine aisle, sustainability is far more than a question of how easy it is to recycle the packaging. Getting a wine onto the supermarket shelf involves so many people and processes and at M&S we look at each step on the journey to ensure that we are working with the right people and supporting some fantastic initiatives in winemaking worldwide.’
