Liam Griffin, 19, from Hamilton, admitting abusing the 11-year-old girl over the course of 12 months. He was released on bail pending sentencing next month. He was placed upon the Sex Offenders’ Register

The court was told the primary pupil didn’t realise she was being abused until her class started sex education lessons.

When he was arrested, 19-year-old Griffin told police: ‘I was studying to be a doctor, but I f***** up everything’.

The Court heard the young victim had kept quiet for months, but finally blurted out what had happened during an argument with her sister.

Medical student Griffin from Hamilton admitted abusing the girl between August 2018 and August last year.

Prosecuting, Mairi-Clare McMillan told the court: ‘She said he had subjected her to numerous episodes of sexual abuse, sometimes as often as every two weeks.

‘This occurred when she visited his home and it was always in his bedroom when they were alone. If another girl was there Griffin would send her downstairs on some pretence.

‘The girl said she didn’t realise at first that what he did was wrong, but this changed through her getting sex education at school.’

After assaulting her on the final occasion Griffin said ‘bye’ to his victim and left the house to visit his then girlfriend.

The abuse came to light on August 20 last year when the victim was having an argument with her sister at home.

They began to shout and during this she disclosed that the accused had touched her inappropriately and made her touch him.

Ms McMillan added: ‘On hearing the argument, the girls’ mother went to the bedroom where she was told by the victim that the accused had sexually assaulted her.

‘The accused’s mother was contacted. She confronted him in his bedroom and he confirmed it was true.’

The Court then heard how the girl confirmed to police officers and social workers that she was in P7 when Griffin first molested her.

Sheriff Thomas Millar deferred sentence on Griffin, who has no previous convictions, until March 23, placing him on bail in the meantime.

Background reports and a risk assessment were called for and Griffin was placed on the sex offenders’ register.
