Meghan Markle goes for a hug as she arrives at Windsor Castle – just days after ‘awkward’ moment

Meghan Markle opted for another informal hug as she arrived at Windsor castle today – just days after that ‘awkward’ moment on stage at the One World Summit.

The Duchess of Sussex, 38, could be seen opening her own car door as she attended a round-table discussion on gender equality with The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust (QCT) and One Young World.

The mother-of-one, who arrived alongside husband Prince Harry, 35, who drove the pair to the engagement, could be seen tucking her hair behind her ears as she held her arms out in front of her – hinting at her preferred greeting.

On Wednesday, the dilemma that many people face when being introduced to royalty – do you bow, curtsy or simply shake hands – lead to a rather awkward encounter.

The organiser Kate Robertson clashed with the duchess by performing a respectful curtsy, while she was caught her off guard by trying to offer an embrace.

There are no obligatory rules on greeting the Queen or her family members, but tradition dictates that men may wish to bow their heads while women perform a small curtsy. A handshake is also perfectly acceptable, but hugging is not customary.

The event at the Royal Albert Hall marked Meghan’s first public appearance since the explosive documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, in which the royal admitted to struggling the spotlight.

But she looked confident as she strode on to the stage and opened her arms to give organiser Kate a warm hug.

Unfortunately, Ms Robertston decided to curtsy to the duchess at the same time, resulting in her putting her arms around Meghan’s waist, while the royal’s hands went around her shoulders.

The women laughed off the mishap, with Meghan shaking her head and insisting that they still share a hug.

And Meghan put on another stylish display today as she joined a discussion with impactful young leaders from around the world, who revealed how they are driving meaningful change for empowering women.

The participants are all leading projects and ventures that support gender equality and inclusion in countries including South Africa, Nigeria, Iraq, Malawi and Bangladesh.

They shared achievements and best practices that have helped empower communities to overcome complex challenges and significant obstacles.

The roundtable was led by QCT Chief Executive, Nicola Brentnall, with moderation from One Young World Counsellors, Rosanna Burgos and Mark Tewksbury.

The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, which The Duchess of Sussex serves as VicePresident, is an organisation that champions, connects and funds young leaders from the Commonwealth’s global family of fifty-three countries, who are working hard to shape the world they want to see.

The One Young World Summit is a global forum for young leaders, bringing together 2,000 young people from over 190 countries around the world to accelerate social impact.

One Young World’s mission is to create the next generation of more responsible and effective leadership.

Her Royal Highness is a longstanding supporter of One Young World, having first joined as a Counsellor at the 2014 Summit in Dublin, addressing young leaders on the importance of women’s rights and the role men play in achieving equality.
