FIRST LOOK: Michelle Keegan appears as nurse Kate in upcoming 1950s BBC drama series Ten Pound Poms

Michelle Keegan has appeared in first-look pictures for upcoming BBC series Ten Pound Poms.

The actress, 35, plays nurse Kate in the much-anticipated drama, which was written by Danny Brocklehurst.

Michelle was neatly turned out in her nurse’s uniform as she answered the phone – in a very different snap to her usual glamorous red carpet looks.

In another image, the star donned a 1950s-style grey winter coat and wore a chic beret over her brunette locks.

She kept her make-up natural as she looked typically stunning in the sneak peek from when the drama was filmed on location in Australia last year.

Michelle’s character Kate is a young nurse who arrives in Australia without her fiancé and is trying to rewrite her devastating life.

The 1950s drama, which also features Game of Thrones star Faye Marsay as Annie and Warren Brown as Terry, shows a group of Brits leaving dreary post-war life for a new start in sunny Australia over six episodes.

For only £10 they are offered a better job, home and lifestyle – but find that life down under is very different to what they expected.

Struggling with their new identity as immigrants, we follow their triumphs and pitfalls as they adapt to a new life in a new country, far from Britain and familiarity.

At the heart of the drama are Annie (Faye Marsay) and Terry Roberts (Warren Brown).

They try to make the best of the situation for their family, but the poor living conditions at the migrant hostel and local attitudes towards immigrants test them in ways they couldn’t have imagined.

Bill (Leon Ford) has lost his family business back home and is so desperate to prove he’s living the Australian dream that he’ll stop at nothing in order to get a lifestyle he can’t sustain.

Teenager Stevie (Declan Coyle) comes from a troubled background and hopes to use this new adventure to escape his oppressive father.

Meanwhile, Ron (Rob Collins), an Indigenous Australian war veteran, struggles with feeling like an outsider in his own country.

The Ten Pound Poms Scheme was introduced in 1945 to migrate Britons to Australia and New Zealand.
