Morrisons has had to put a cap on the amount of Marathon bar mulitpacks customers can purchase after a shopper bought more than 3,388 bars in one visit.

The nougat, peanut and chocolate treat has been called Snickers since 1990, but parent company Mars has brought back its original name, Marathon, for 12 weeks.

But one eager customer at Morrisons West Denton store in Newcastle stocked up on the limited edition snack, spending £847 on 847 packs of four bars, 3,388 bars in total.

Another customer in Weybridge spent £101 for 101 packs, 404 bars in total.

Mars has produced a limited edition version of the Marathon bar, which is being sold in Morrisons in a four pack for £1. But customers can now only buy four packs in one shop

Starting today, Morrisons has limited numbers to four packs per shopper to ensure that all customers can get their hands on a bar.

A total of 448,000 of the nostalgic bars have been bought in the first 10 days of them becoming available on September 8.

The bars are only available at Morrisons in a four pack for £1 until the end of November.

The bars were initially named Marathon in the UK and Snickers in the US, before they were renamed to Snickers in the UK in 1990 to make the brand globally consistent.

While the bars will not be sold separately, it looks like Mars is also going back to 1990s pricing.

The £1 price for a four pack means the cost of one Marathon bar will be as low as 25p.

In the early 1990s when the bar’s name was changed, they were sold for 24p each.

Morrisons chocolate buyer Chris Strong said: ‘The demand for the classic Marathon bars has outweighed our expectations which is why we are ensuring more people have the chance of buying some.’
