Mother who lost both her children in the Dreamworld tragedy relives her anguish

The devastated mother who lost both of her children in the Dreamworld theme park tragedy has revealed her continued anguish two years after the accident.

Kim Dorsett’s children Luke Dorsett, 35, and Kate Goodchild, 32, were crushed to death by machinery on the Thunder River Rapids ride at the Gold Coast theme park on October 25, 2016.

Luke’s partner Roozi Araghi and New Zealand mother Cindy Low also died when the raft they were riding flipped on a conveyor belt.

Ms Dorsett told Channel Seven’s Sunday Night she still relives the moment her children were killed, wishing the conveyor belt could have been stopped before the tragedy.

‘Push that button. That’s all they had to do. My kids would still be here,’ she said.

‘That’s all it took from when the raft went up… till it was all over. It was seven seconds. Just seven seconds. And they could have stopped that conveyor belt in two.’

Kate was a mother to two young daughters – Ebony, 12, and newborn Evie.

Ms Dorsett revealed the heroic last act of her son Luke, who managed to save his niece from an excruciating death as the equipment failed.

‘I think (Luke) realised what was happening, and he saw Ebony falling, and he grabbed her, steadied her, and then pushed her off the side. Saved his niece, absolutely,’ Ms Dorsett said.

After checking her phone to discover six missed calls, Ms Dorsett was notified of the death of her children by two police officers.

‘Just absolutely surreal. Thinking that you’d lost one, all three of them was… and at Dreamworld – I just could not… to go to a park and not come home,’ she said.

‘They all took that time to say goodbye that morning.

‘They all got into the car and left. Then three of them just never came back. And I live that moment forever.’

Ms Dorsett said she had a bad feeling the morning of the tragedy.

‘I remember waking up and just had an uneasy feeling, but never in my wildest dreams was going to happen to the kids or anybody I knew, just that something wasn’t quite right.’

She is upset at how the aftermath of the tragedy was handled by Dreamworld’s parent company Ardent Leisure, and disputed claims from chief executive Deborah Thomas that she had spoken to the family before the inquest hearings.

‘I think I did get a bit annoyed at that, because I knew that wasn’t true.

‘I guess the big thing is that if anyone would have pushed that button to stop that conveyor belt, anybody, that’s all they had to do was to push that button, my kids would still be here.’
