An organised mum-of-two has shared her simple method for deep cleaning your washing machine, and revealed why you need to do so once a fortnight in order to prevent odours and bacteria.

‘Here’s how to deep clean a washing machine,’ Carolina posted on TikTok.

The first thing Carolina said you should do is add a spoonful of baking soda to the washing machine’s drum.

Baking soda acts as a natural brightener and deodoriser.

When added to a washing machine, it works to gently scrub the inside and combat those stale, mouldy odours that are left behind via old soap and fabric softener deposits.

Following this, Carolina said you should pull the rubbery door seal back and spray it gently with white vinegar.

White vinegar is one of nature’s best cleaning products – it cuts through residue, buildup, hard water stains, and even grease effortlessly.

‘Wipe the white vinegar in with a microfibre cloth,’ Carolina added.

Next, add a cup of white vinegar to the compartment where you usually put your washing powder.

‘Finally, set the machine to a hot cycle,’ Carolina said.

If you want to add a finishing touch, you can leave the washing machine door open for it to air dry out once clean.
