Mum is hailed a ‘hero’ after sharing a picture of the lunchbox she sends her son to school with: ‘I pick my battles’

  • A mum has been hailed a ‘hero’ after sharing a basic lunch she makes for her son
  • Many were quick to say that the lunchbox is actually deceptively healthy

A mother has been hailed a ‘hero’ after sharing a picture of the lunchbox she sends her son to school with.

The Australian mum-of-two, Sarah, said she was tired of seeing all of the impressive bento-style lunchboxes that are often posted on social media, and so she wanted to show exactly what she feeds her child.

Sarah wrote: ‘Posting so others don’t feel mum guilt. Yes, I would love to offer my child a smorgasbord of healthy goodies, but I have a fussy eater who prefers simple boring lunches’.

She added: ‘I pick my battles’.

The lunch Sarah sent her son to school with consisted of a sandwich covered in cling wrap, a pear, and a packet of Mammee rice snack sticks.

It wasn’t long before her post was flooded with comments from thousands of other parents who applauded Sarah’s honesty.

Poll

Do you think the lunchbox is healthy?

‘You will be happy with the simplicity over the years, trust me,’ one mum wrote.

‘Love the simplicity. You do you hun,’ another added.

A third wrote: ‘My daughter is in year 5 and has pretty much taken a Vegemite sandwich every day since kindergarten. She will randomly change it up but always comes back to the Vegemite sanga’.

The same parent added that you don’t have to be ‘fancy’ and she always sends the ‘same thing’ consisting of a sandwich, an apple, two cucumbers, a homemade two-ingredient banana oat bar, a homemade chocolate ball and a packet of popcorn.

Others said the lunchbox is actually healthier than she is giving herself credit for, given that it contains fruit, complex carbohydrates and snacks.

‘I had lunches like this growing up. I’m amazed at how much food kids take to school for lunch these days. I couldn’t even eat all that,’ one person wrote.

She recommends plant-based treats like fresh juices and smoothies, chopped-up vegetables and hummus and seeds, as well as blueberries and strawberries over jelly and rich jams.

‘Use different types of fruits and vegetables, seeds, coconut flakes, full fat calcium rich dairy foods, protein rich foods such as meats, eggs, seed butters, pulses and tuna and oily fish,’ the nutritionist advised.
