My daughter’s unusual name always raises eyebrows – but it’s nothing compared to others we had on our list

A mother who has faced constant criticism for her daughter’s unusual name has revealed that others on her list were far more out of the ordinary.

The woman, believed to be from the US, shared a video on TikTok of her newborn daughter next to a sign displaying her name – Stone Monroe.

Viewers dubbed the moniker ‘horrendous’ and ‘terrible’, while another said: ‘Stone… seriously? she’s not a rock.’

But the mother hit back at the criticism, insisting the name is far better than others she had on her baby name list.

She then shared 10 of the names she considered for the newborn.

They included: ‘Melrose, Savie, Baynx, Haze, Capri, Cove, Maxim, Scout, Cobain and Nirvana.’

Her longer list faced similar criticism to the moniker she and her partner eventually decided on.

One person said: ‘I mean, you can’t name your baby something weird as s**t and terrible and not expect to get s**t for it.’

Another added: ‘People are so mad about these new and different names come out.

‘Sorry there’s so many Ashley’s out there. I’m sure the first Ashley was mocked too.’

However, a third person said: ‘You’re naming ADULTS come one.’

Others pointed out that a more common name – Sloane – is very similar.

It comes after experts listed the baby names that are in danger of going extinct, and the others given to fewer than five children in the US in 2021.

The team from parenting website Nameberry said while you might think the names Gary, Karen and Nigel are likely to be on the list, in fact hundreds of parents still use them every year – and it’s too early to tell whether they will become extinct.

Instead, the names included in the ‘truly extinct’ list are monikers like Pam, Bob and Deb.

‘These truly extinct names have left the charts, and aren’t likely to return anytime soon,’ the Nameberry team highlighted.

‘Classic nicknames like Pam, Bob and Deb need another few decades before they sound fresh again, and full forms Pamela, Robert and Deborah will come back into fashion first.’

Some of the girls’ names included in the truly extinct list are Bess, Carole, Cyndi, Dory and Kath.

While the boys’ names included are Herb, Bert, Dick, Wilt and Barney.
