Mystery surrounds the death of a woman more than a year after 400 fragments of her bones were found at a rock pool.

Police are ramping up on their investigation and asking for any information after bones were found in rock pools at Ricketts Point in Beaumaris, south of Melbourne, in January 2018.

After fearing water would sweep away the fragments, staff called police and assisted them in collecting over 400 pieces.

Forensic examinations found the bones were from a woman who was over the age of 20, but she has not been identified.

The tests revealed the mystery woman’s back teeth on both sides were missing before she died.

‘Over the past 18 months we’ve done an enormous amount of work trying to determine exactly who this woman is,’ Detective Sergeant Maurie Ryan from the Victoria Missing Persons Squad told the ABC.

Police thought someone may have asked for their loved one’s bones from a crematorium, but discounted this theory after investigating.

With many leads exhausted, homicide detectives are seeking help from the public to solve the mystery.

‘We’re interested in speaking to anyone who has information about how the bones came to be in (the) rock pool, or who might have left them there and why,’ Sergeant Ryan said.

‘There is definitely a story behind these bones and it’s one we want to know — and there will definitely be someone out there who can tell it to us.’
