New York terror attack condemned by Theresa May

Prime Minister Theresa May has condemned the New York terror attack and told the American people ‘together we will defeat terrorism’.

Eight people were killed and 11 injured after a truck mounted a bicycle path in lower Manhattan this afternoon.

The attacker was heard shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ as he ploughed into cyclists and runners.

He came to a stop by crashing into a school bus after plowing through others on the bike path. There were several children inside the bus and some are feared to have been injured but none are in a critical condition

Responding to the atrocity in Manhattan, Mrs May tweeted: ‘Appalled by this cowardly attack, my thoughts are with all affected.

‘Together we will defeat the evil of terrorism. UK stands with #NYC.’  

US President Donald Trump tweeted a similar message of defiance.

He wrote: ‘We must not allow ISIS to return, or enter, our country after defeating them in the Middle East and elsewhere. Enough!’

Mr Trump later posted: ‘My thoughts, condolences and prayers to the victims and families of the New York City terrorist attack. God and your country are with you!

The terrorist responsible for the horrific attack was 29-year-old Uzbek Sayfullo Saipov.

The attacker has been named as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov from Florida. Witnesses said he did not resist arrest after being shot in the stomach on Tuesday afternoon

He had mounted the bicycle path at Houston Street at 3.05pm and driven 17 blocks in his rented truck, knocking down victims before coming to a stop at Chambers Street where he eventually crashed in to a school bus. 

He then emerged waving a paintball gun in one hand and a pellet gun in the other.

He was shot in the stomach by an on-duty NYPD officer and is now in hospital under police supervision.
