Nicolas Cage says fans often acted out famous Cher ‘Snap out of it!’ line from Moonstruck with slap

Nicolas Cage says he’s been slapped by overzealous fans many times as they quote a famous line Cher uttered to his character in the 1987 film Moonstruck.

The 59-year-old actor chat with Entertainment Tonight Monday in New York City for the debut of his new movie Renfield alongside costar Nicholas Hoult.

Cage portrayed the role of Ronny Cammareri opposite Cher’s Loretta Castorini in the romantic comedy, which hit theaters in December of 1987.

‘For the longest time, back from Moonstruck,’ Cage said, ‘I would walk to the airport and people just had a habit of saying, “Snap out of it!” from Moonstruck – the Cher “Snap out of it” – and I did get slapped a few times.’

Hoult, 33, said, ‘No, no!’ to which Cage affirmed, ‘Oh yeah, I did – and that, you know, it’s part of the job.’

Cage theorized that the overanxious fans are auditioning for him with the displays: ‘I think maybe [they think] I’ll cast them in something – who knows?’

The Norman Jewison-directed movie also starred late Hollywood icons such as Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello, Vincent Gardenia and John Mahoney.

It garnered three Oscar wins on six nominations in 1988, including Best Actress in a Leading Role for Cher, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Dukakis and Best Screenplay for John Patrick Shanley.

Cage would go on to win an Oscar for Best Actor in 1996 for his performance in 1995’s Leaving Las Vegas.

Cage told the outlet that among his favorite lines he’s said in his career is one from 1990’s Wild at Heart, in speaking about his character’s snakeskin coat: ‘And for me it’s a symbol of my individuality and my belief and personal freedom.’

Cage plays the role of Count Dracula in the forthcoming Renfield, saying he’s found the character ‘profound and compelling’ since reading the book Dracula.

‘Dracula, although it’s a supernatural character, he’s really saying something about the human experience,’ he said. ‘Which is if you supplant an addiction to blood with an addiction to alcohol or heroin or sex you can see that those are human issues that people contend with, and then you factor in eternal life or eternal undead experience, you’re going to get … your heart broken time and time again and be betrayed. And I think that’s something people can also relate to.’

Renfield, which also stars Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz and Shohreh Aghdashloo, arrives in theaters April 14.
