No seeds of doubt for Scott as Williams continues the upsets with win over Damon Heta to set up quarter-final against Michael van Gerwen

  • Williams beat another seeded player in Heta to reach last eight of Championship
  • He is playing his second World Championship and played down MVG fixture
  • 33-year-old had already beaten top-32 men Danny Noppert and Martin Schindler

Scott Williams continued his demolition of the seeds at the World Championship with a 4-1 win over Damon Heta to set up a dream quarter-final against Michael van Gerwen.

The 33-year-old from Lincolnshire reeled off three straight sets — featuring a show-stopping 170 checkout — to raise the roof at Alexandra Palace and send the 10th seed packing.

Williams, playing in just his second World Championship, had already seen off top-32 stars Danny Noppert and Martin Schindler.

But if he is feeling the pressure of now having to take on three-time champion Van Gerwen in the last eight, he is certainly not showing it. ‘It’s just a game of darts, isn’t it?’ he said. ‘There’s no point in being scared, is there?

‘If I go up there and play my darts I can win — if I don’t, I won’t. He’s different gravy to everyone else in the competition but it’s all about hitting doubles and at the moment my doubles have been good.

‘There is absolutely no reason why I can’t win this competition.’

Former champion Rob Cross is also through to the quarter-finals after a stunning 4-0 thrashing of Jonny Clayton.

Former Premier League winner Clayton managed to win just four legs as 2018 winner Cross set up a last-eight showdown with Chris Dobey.

Cross said: ‘I feel for Jonny a bit because he’s the nicest guy I’ve ever met.

‘I wasn’t practising well today but on stage I played really well.’

Dave Chisnall also eased into the last eight, courtesy of a 4-2 success over Northern Ireland’s Daryl Gurney.
