Norwegian court orders herder to kill 125 reindeer

  • Norway’s Supreme Court yesterday told Jovsset Sara, 25, to reduce herd
  • He must cut it down from 200 to 75 after government order was ruled valid
  • But the herder said he will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights

A herder has been ordered to kill 125 of his reindeer to preserve land.

Norway’s Supreme Court yesterday told Jovsset Ante Sara, 25, to reduce his 200-strong herd to 75.

It said a government order which Mr Sara was appealing against was ‘valid’ and the slaughter must take place to ensure sustainable management of the land.

The herder, from the indigenous Sami community, argued that such a reduction would financially ruin him and that the ruling would breach human rights norms.

Norway’s Supreme Court said that the cull order did not violate Sara’s rights but he has vowed to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

‘As I read it, the ruling doesn’t take into account the rights of the Sami people,’ said defense lawyer Trond Pedersen Biti.

Earlier this month, the herder’s sister, Maret Anne Sara, drew attention to the case when hanging up a curtain made of 400 bullet-ridden reindeer skulls outside Norway’s parliament in Oslo.
