Nova radio star Jase Hawkins breaks down live on air ahead of flight to Gold Coast amid family tragedy: ‘Toughest thing I’ve ever done in my life’

Jase Hawkins fought back tears on Friday morning as he revealed he is flying up to Queensland amid a family tragedy.

Speaking with co-host Lauren Phillips on their Melbourne Nova 100 radio show, Jase, 42, said he will jet to the Gold Coast after work to spread his parents’ ashes.

The media personality broke down in tears as he recalled the deaths of his parents Paul and Janet, with his father passing in 2021 and his mother following in 2023.

‘I’m going up to the Gold Coast this weekend. We are scattering my parents ashes,’ Jase began.

Co-host Lauren, 37, asked: ‘How are you feeling about it? We’ve talked about this. We have talked about it offline.

‘We’ve talked about it online a couple of times, but we’ve talked about it offline a lot.’

Jase told his colleague it was particularly hard to watch his father’s funeral via Zoom in 2021 because he was stuck in the Melbourne lockdowns during COVID.

‘It’s funny, just the last two days, it’s probably hit me,’ he said as he began to choke up with tears.

‘Dad passed away during COVID. I was never there for the funeral. Watched it on Zoom, possibly the toughest thing I’ve ever done in my life.

‘And I know unfortunately, a lot of other people had to do that as well. And I think it’s something that…’ Jase abruptly cut off with an apology as he began to break down.

When he managed to compose himself, Jase went on to explain to viewers he was flying to the Gold Coast that same day to scatter his parents’ ashes at Miami Beach.

‘We’re gonna scatter both their ashes this weekend at Miami Beach, which is where we used to go on holiday every year,’ he said.

‘So it’ll be really cool. It’s gonna bring up some nice memories… The whole family, we’re all staying at the same place. So it’s gonna sort of feel like schoolies week.’

Lauren cheerfully replied: ‘That’s what dad would have wanted!’

Despite feeling teary over the loss of his parents, Jase said he would try to ‘have fun’ over the weekend and enjoy the memories he will share with family.
