Pauline Hanson reveals ‘bad news’ about dual citizenship

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has informed the Australian public she has received ‘bad news’ regarding her citizenship status.

In a post on her Facebook page on Monday night, Senator Hanson revealed she has received a letter from British Immigration, after admitting she had not checked if she was a dual citizenship.

The letter came after Ms Hanson admitted her grandparents were born in the UK, leading some to claim she could fall foul of dual citizenship laws.

However, the letter confirmed Ms Hanson had no connection to the UK and was not a dual citizen.

Teasing her followers, the One Nation leader said: ‘Only bad news for the major parties is I’m as Aussie as they come.’

The letter from British Immigration confirmed the senator derived ‘no claim to British citizenship based on your grandparents having been born in the UK’.

The 63-year-old, whose parents were both born in Australia, admitted she had English grandparents on one side of her family.

‘I can assure everyone I am not eligible for British citizenship,’ she said previously in Gladstone, during a regional blitz in the Queensland election campaign.

The Senator appeared delighted with the news, telling her followers the 'only bad news for the major parties is I'm as Aussie as they come'

The One Nation leader was asked by a reporter on Tuesday whether she had checked her eligibility with the British Home Office.

‘Honey you know what, I’ll leave it up to you to do it on my behalf,’ Ms Hanson replied.

‘I have nothing to answer to, I clear section 44 of the Australian constitution.

‘I know what the laws are in England.’

Last month the High Court ruled five federal politicians, including former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce and One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts, held dual citizenship and were therefore ineligible to remain in parliament.
