Pensioner, 69, must pay £1,300 after daubing ‘LIARS’ in red paint on BBC Wales HQ in Gaza protest

A woman has been ordered to pay £1,300 after painting the word ‘LIARS’ onto BBC Wales’ HQ to protest their coverage of the war in Gaza.

Deidre Murphy, 69, was found guilty of criminal damage after the word was sprayed in red paint on the BBC’s Cardiff office. 

She attacked the broadcaster’s building after a protest opposing Israel’s bombing of the Gaza Strip on October 28 last year.

The protesters first met at the Aneurin Bevan statue in the city before walking to the BBC building where Murphy carried out the damage.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge but was found guilty following a trial at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court.

Murphy, of Murton, Swansea, was sentenced to a conditional discharge of two years and was ordered to pay compensation of £702 to the BBC and court costs of £650.

Murphy and a number of supporters congregated outside Cardiff Magistrates’ Court where they waved Palestinian flags and sang ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.’
