Plans for Europe’s tallest apartment block are unveiled in Moscow

Plans for Europe’s tallest apartment block – 101 storeys high and 1,330ft tall – are unveiled for Moscow

  • Moscow’s new tower will include apartments, shops and an observation deck
  • The ‘complex and ambitious project’ will become the tallest building in Moscow
  • The city last year lost its claim to have Russia’s tallest building to St Petersburg

Moscow is planning to build the tallest apartment block in Europe, which will have 101 storeys and stand 1,330 feet tall.

Authorities in the Russian capital announced the ‘complex and ambitious project’ today, promising it would be built ‘with high quality and on time’.

The new building will be the tallest in Moscow and include shops, restaurants and a children’s leisure centre, city bosses revealed.

Above the high-rise apartments there will also be an observation deck on the 100th floor.

No estimate was given for how much the tower will cost or how long it will take to complete.

Some 2,000 people will be employed to build the tower, a statement said, adding that it would include a children’s leisure area and a business centre.

The building will have 101 storeys above ground and three below, providing space for underground parking.

‘This is a unique object in terms of its functional, visual and technological parameters’ with no parallel in Europe, said Albert Suniyev of construction firm Mosinzhproekt.

The firm has also won contracts to build 79 new stations on the Moscow metro and work on the Luzhniki Stadium, which hosted the 2018 World Cup final.

Moscow last year lost its claim to have Europe’s tallest building, when St Petersburg completed its Lakhta Tower.

The St Petersburg skyscraper stands at 1,516ft tall, beating Moscow’s Federation Tower into second place.

The new apartment block tower will also be 100 feet taller than the Federation Tower, city planners say, but will not beat the St Petersburg building.

Europe’s tallest building outside Russia is the Shard in central London, which has 95 storeys and is 1,017 feet high.

One Canada Square, the centrepiece of London’s Canary Wharf, is also in the top 20 in Europe.

Dubai’s Burj Khalifa has been the tallest building in the world since 2009.

Saudi Arabia has plans for a 3,300-ft skyscraper called the Jeddah Tower which would take the number one spot from Dubai, but its construction has faced delays.
