Police release shocking video of a suspect escaping from their squad car

Indiana authorities have released video of an ‘extremely dangerous’ suspect escaping from a squad car that was parked inside a jail garage.

Michael Maldonado, 25, allegedly escaped from Porter County authorities shortly after 11am on Monday just moments after officers had parked in the garage of the Porter County Jail. 

Surveillance footage shows two police vehicle pulling into the garage and parking.

He then opens the driver’s door and makes a beeline to the opening in the garage door. 

Maldonado makes a narrow escape under the door as the officers try to run after him. 

One of the officers sounds the jail’s alarm while the other officer releases his K-9. 

The officers are then seen running out of the jail’s garage with the K-9.

Maldonado was last seen running south from the Porter County Jail wearing a black T-Shirt, sweatpants, no shoes and still handcuffed. 

According to Portage Police, Maldonado was initially taken into custody on charges of resisting law enforcement, resisting law enforcement with injury and possession of a hypodermic needle stemming from a traffic stop in Portage. 

Officers with Porter County, Lake County Helicopter unit, Valparaiso PD, and Portage PD flooded the area of Pratt Industries, searching for Maldonado on foot and by vehicle with for two hours.

Maldonado is still at large and authorities warned the public that he’s extremely dangerous. 

Earlier on Tuesday, at approximately Valparaiso Police Department received a call from an employee with Pratt Industries who reported his grey 2013 Ford Focus had been stolen from the parking lot. 

Authorities believe the stolen vehicle may be connected to Maldonado’s escape. 

Porter County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the search, but Maldonado was not Portage Police custody at the time of the incident. 

As of Tuesday evening, Maldonado had still not been located nor has the stolen vehicle. 

If anyone has any information on the whereabouts of Maldonado or the listed stolen vehicle, they are being asked to call the Portage Police at 762-3122 or 911 if it is a true emergency.
