Prince Louis smiles for the camera on his first birthday as he shows off a toothy grin

With rosy cheeks and big brown eyes, this cheeky chappy has clearly inherited a thing or two from his mother.

And if that smile is anything to go by, a passion for the great outdoors can certainly be counted among these.

The last time we saw Louis – who bears a striking resemblance to his mother at his age –was on the Cambridge family’s Christmas card when he was just a babe in arms.

Now Louis is crawling – and very proud of himself, too, by the looks of it.

The fifth in line to the throne is beginning to look more and more like older brother George, with his sweep of blond hair no doubt smoothed with the same styling balm that Kate, 37, uses on her eldest son.

And it’s not just the coiffure he’s adopted – under his red wool jumper, Louis appears to be wearing one of George’s romper suits, identifiable by its distinctive Peter Pan collar with blue piping.

The third in line to the throne has worn several over the years, but this looks most like the £79 romper by Rachel Riley, which he wore as a youngster on a family trip to New Zealand.

In another photo, Louis wears an adorable blue cashmere mix jumper with a puppy motif from upmarket store Trotters, which is currently on sale reduced from £44 to £35.

Although eyebrows were raised when the duchess first started using her own snaps in place of official palace photographs, there’s no doubt these candid portraits come to life with a mother’s touch – showing Louis in a natural light, happy at play.

And they capture Kate’s previous description of her youngest son as an active child who enjoys ‘bombing around’ on his baby walker. ‘He just wants to pull himself up all the time. He’s got these little walkers and is bombing around on them,’ she said.

The Cambridge family will be spending the little prince’s birthday privately at Kensington Palace, since George is due back at school and Prince William is flying later in the day to New Zealand to represent the Queen in paying respects to those affected by the Christchurch mosque shootings.

Prince Louis Arthur Charles was born at 11.01am on April 23 last year – St George’s Day –weighing 8lb 7oz.

He made his public debut in his mother’s arms on the steps of the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington.

He has been seen in public only once since then at his christening last summer.

Sources say he is a happy boy, doted on by his brother and sister. Princess Charlotte, in particular, is said to be overjoyed at having a ‘real life’ baby to look after.

But with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first child due this week or next – how would the little prince feel about sharing his big day with a cousin, as well as England’s patron saint?

As the youngest of the Cambridges’ three children, one-year-old Louis has a lot of sweetness to live up too.

And the Prince has proven he’s as adorable as his siblings in a set of cute pictures, taken at home in Norfolk by his mother Kate Middleton, to celebrate his first birthday.

In one of the photographs, the rosy-cheeked youngster looks inquisitively at the camera while wearing a blue jumper from high street brand Trotters.

The sweater, which was originally priced at £44 but is now on sale for £35, is worn over a white collared top to create a stylish and smart outfit for the little Prince.

The Trotters website describes the garment as being a ‘soft, warm cashmere mix’ and a ‘must have for layering this spring’.

The navy jumper is also available in pale pink ‘to create the perfect matching outfits for little brothers and sisters’.

In the other two pictures, Prince Louis beams and gives his best cheeky expression for the camera, even reaching out towards it in one.

For these adorable snaps, Louis was dressed in a red jumper with tortoiseshell buttons across the left shoulder and a pair of black trousers.

The playful youngster is covered in bits of moss, having clearly had a wonderful time playing in the garden during the photoshoot with his mother.

His broad smiles show off his two bottom teeth – and it looks like two more may be on their way soon.

This is not the first time that the young royals have been dressed in pieces from the high street store.

In June last year, both George and Charlotte wore matching £26 canvas plimsolls from Trotters to watch their dad compete in the Maserati Royal Charity Polo Trophy.

Sophie Mirman and Richard Ross opened the doors to the first Trotters store on the King’s Road in Chelsea in 1990, and have since gone on to open six more, with the brand winning awards and numerous high-profile fans.

In March, Kate revealed during a visit to a children’s centre that Louis, then about 11 months old, was an active child who enjoyed ‘bombing around’ on a walker.

‘He just wants to pull himself up all the time. He’s got these little walkers and is bombing around on them,’ she told a fellow parent.

Louis is fifth in line to the throne, a great-grandchild of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, and the younger sibling of Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Louis made his debut in Kate’s arms as his proud parents showed him off to the world on the steps of the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, just hours after he was born.

The name Louis was already one of George’s middle names and pays tribute to the Prince of Wales’s great-uncle, Earl Mountbatten, who was murdered by the IRA.

William and Kate released photos of their son soon after he was born – including one of him being cuddled by his big sister Charlotte on her third birthday when Louis was only about a week old.

Louis was sleeping soundly, as Charlotte put a protective arm around her baby brother and planted a kiss on his forehead.

The prince was next seen fast asleep at his christening in July, and alert and smiling in family photographs released to mark the occasion.

Louis, who appears to have inherited the brown Middleton eyes from Kate’s side of the family, was pictured with his wider family, including the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall in photos released to mark Charles’s 70th birthday in November.
