Princess Michael of Kent ‘will attend Harry and Meghan’s wedding’

Princess Michael of Kent is still expected to attend Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding – after claims she named two black sheep Venus and Serena.

The Queen’s cousin, 73, is alleged to have owned two black sheep in Gloucestershire named after the Williams sisters.

However, she is still likely to be a guest at the royal wedding at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, next month despite the controversy, experts say.

It comes after Princess Michael sparked controversy by wearing a ‘racist’ blackamoor brooch to her first lunch with Meghan.

Speaking to the Express, royal biographer Hugo Vickers said: ‘Of course she will still be invited. It is ridiculous.

‘It is usual for all of the Royal family to be invited… where the Michaels live is almost opposite their front door.’

However, Mr Vickers added that Harry does have more control than previous royals over who is and isn’t on the guest list.

He said: ‘Having said that, as far as Prince Harry is concerned, the rules go out the window and he invites who he chooses.’

The speculation over whether Princess Michael will be attending the royal wedding next month comes after the controversial claims made by daughter Lady Gabriella Windsor’s ex-boyfriend Aatish Taseer.

Writing in Vanity Fair, Mr Taseer claimed that ‘Royals and Nazis go together like blini and caviar,’ alleging that ‘everyone above a certain age in Britain is at least a tiny bit racist’.

‘Princess Michael, though generally free of British colonial prejudices, and beyond reproach when it came to me, nevertheless invited trouble out of what felt like a desire to shock: her pair of black sheep in Gloucestershire were named Venus and Serena,’ he wrote.

Serena Williams is one of Meghan’s close friends, but it is not yet clear whether she will be attending the royal wedding next month.

Princess Michael came under fire at Christmas for wearing a blackamoor brooch to her first lunch with Meghan, who is mixed race.

The royal later apologised for wearing the controversial accessory brooch to the Queen’s lunch at Buckingham Palace.

A spokesperson said that she was ‘very sorry and distressed’ for wearing the brooch, adding it was a gift she has worn many times before, without controversy.

The full statement said: ‘The brooch was a gift and has been worn many times before. Princess Michael is very sorry and distressed that it has caused offence.’

Kensington Palace declined to comment.
