Australian tennis fans are celebrating their new tennis superstar after Anja Tomljanovic out-lasted American icon Serena Williams at the US Open – but they are not very happy with the US star’s supporters.

Tomljanovic showed incredible mental resilience to shut out the pro-Serena Williams crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York – the largest tennis arena in the world.

The Australian claimed the first set before falling into a 5-1 hole in the second with the 23-time grand slam champion riding momentum and the support from the parochial 23,771 strong crowd.

‘Wow. U.S Open crowd cheering when Tomljanovic serves a fault. Pull your effing heads in,’ posted another.

‘Is Serena Williams incessant screaming at the net when she puts a ball away poor sportsmanship? I can’t say publicly what I would want to do to an opponent who does this

However other fans were quick to point out Australian tennis fans have also tormented international opponents including world No.1  Daniil Medvedev and former No.1 Novak Djokovic.

‘The Aussie crowd did that to Daniil in the final against Rafa. When he did a fault they would chant double and then make noise when he was tossing the ball up for his second serve. It’s beyond disrespectful to do that to a player,’ a tennis fan said.

‘C’mon people! If this would be the AO, it would be the exact same thing for Serena,’ one fan posted.

‘How many matches have [we] watched with Nick [Kyrgios] singles or Nick doubles when the crowd does exactly the same thing the US folk are doing for Serena,’ said another.

Tomljanovic managed to stay in her own bubble and shut out the crowd during the win and was classy in victory, honouring the opponent she had idolised her entire career.

‘I’m feeling really sorry just because I love Serena just as much as you guys do,’ she said.

‘What she has done for me, the sport of tennis is incredible and I never thought I’d have a chance to play her in her last match.

‘I remember watching her as a kid in all those finals. This is a surreal moment for me.’

‘These are happy tears I guess, I don’t know.

‘And I wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t [my sister] Venus, so thank you Venus.’
