Queensland camp ground fire forces hundreds of people to flee in total darkness

Hundreds of terrified campers are forced to run for their lives in total darkness after a raging fire burns through a popular tourist hot spot

  • A campsite in Queensland was reported to be engulfed in flames at 1am
  • Five hundred people were forced to flee in order to escape the blaze 
  • Everyone was accounted for by the emergency crews and one injury reported 

Five hundred people were forced to flee a campsite in the middle of the night after multiple buildings caught fire.

The campsite, in Lawn Hill, north of Mount Isa in Queensland, was engulfed in flames at 1am on Tuesday.

Multiple buildings – including the reception and restaurant – were on fire when emergency crews arrived at the remote spot just before 4am.

Crews worked to stop the flames from spreading onto other buildings and crews are still working to dampen the fire. 

A Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia their crews reported approximately 500 people were at the campground.

Everyone at the campground was accounted for by the emergency crews. 

Only one injury was reported to QAS – a minor burn from an ember that was treated before paramedics arrived.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing.
