Residents in shock after Coogee apartment balcony comes crashing to the ground

‘Our boys go down there all the time’: Residents in shock after apartment balcony comes crashing to the ground where children often play

  • The balcony of the two-storey unit in Coogee has had a crack in it for ‘some time’
  • Neighbours heard crack then loud crash when balcony crashed to the ground
  • A neighbour said his young sons occasionally play where the balcony fell

Two young boys are lucky to be alive after an apartment balcony crashed to the ground where they usually play.

The balcony of the unit in Coogee, south-east of Sydney had a crack in it for ‘some time’, residents said, and on Saturday it finally gave way.

Neighbours heard a crack and then a loud crash when the balcony detached from the building and fell two storeys.

The female resident was not at home at the time.

‘Our boys were in the room just below where the balcony fell and there was this huge crash,’ neighbour Andrew Bromhead told Nine News

‘They go down there and collect stones and water plants all the time so that was rather frightening.’

There are now grave concerns on whether the other balconies will fall.

‘If that one fell, when are the others going to fall?’ Mr Bromhead asked.

Firefighters conducted an inspection of the other balconies and said they are ‘structurally sound at this point’.

Council and strata management have been contacted for further investigation.
