Rosie O’Donnell’s former New York City home on the market for $4.75 million

A New York City mansion once home to actress Helen Hayes, comedian Rosie O’Donnell and Russell Crowe to name just a few, has gone on the market for $4.75 million. 

Pretty Penny, at 235 North Broadway in the northern New York City suburbs, has been a magnet for celebrities ever since actress Helen Hayes and her husband, playwright Charles MacArthur, bought it in 1932.

The couple entertained some of the biggest stars of the age at the property, including Marilyn Monroe, Rosalind Russell, Ed Sullivan, Noel Coward, Laurence Olivier, Katharine Hepburn and Vivien Leigh.

They even invited President Ronald Reagan to visit their New York home. 

Comedian Rosie O’Donnell bought it in 1996 for $770,000, although she sold it in 2000.

 In 2005, art dealer W. Graham Arader III bought the home and Russell Crowe also rented the house for six months while filming ‘American Gangster’ in 2006.

Arader initially listed the home for $4.9 million in 2013 but took it off the market. He has since put it back up for sale, having dropped the price to $4.75 million.

The 7,000 sq ft six-bed, eight bathroom Italianate Victorian home, built in 1858, boasts hardwood floors and fireplaces.

The large windows offer views over the Hudson River and the property’s 60-foot in-ground pool, terraced gardens and water features.

It is being listed by agent Richard Ellis, owner of Ellis Sotheby’s International Realty, who said the home is ‘not only extraordinary, but has soul’ according to USA Today.
